Three Reasons Austinites Are Obsessed With George Strait

George Strait may not have been born an Austinite, but his roots run deep in the ATX. From playing at the Broken Spoke to christening the Moody Center to starring in one of the greatest country music movies of all time (we’re talking Pure Country), George Strait always makes us Texans proud!

Here are three reasons Austinites are obsessed with George Strait!

The Broken Spoke Is Strait Country

Many legendary country singers have played the Spoke over the years. You can learn about them all in the Spoke’s museum, aka the “Tourist Trap.” But it’s The King of Country that gets top billing. The country bar and restaurant is so proud that they have this sign out front.

The feeling is mutual. Strait put the honky tonk on the cover of his album in 2019. As if that isn’t enough, he gave the honky tonk a shout out during his surprise appearance at the iHeart Country Awards in 2021. Watch video of that here.

Austin City Limits

This 1989 ACL performance is a classic and we just can’t get enough.

In 2021, The King played the ACL Music Festival for the first time.

Bless the Mood

The Strait from Moody Center Grand Opening Celebration featured, of course, the King of Country Music himself. Special guests included Willie Nelson and Randy Rogers Band. The Texas-sized celebration George and Willie even gang a few songs together and it was pure gold!
