Midnight Cowboy

Midnight Cowboy

Midnight Cowboy is one of the oldest speakeasy style bars in Austin. Opened in 2012, this bar occupies a former brothel that once operated under the name “Midnight Cowboy Modeling Oriental Massage.” Embracing its storied past, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you enter the small intimate atmosphere.

About Midnight Cowboy

Midnight Cowboy really leans into the speakeasy aesthetic. Though it’s located on bustling Sixth Street, you could easily walk right past. There’s no flashy sign—just a nondescript door with a buzzer labeled with fake businesses. You buzz the right one (“Harry Craddock”) to gain entry, giving it that classic Prohibition-era vibe.

Drinks here are top-tier. The bartenders are true mixologists, often using house-made ingredients, rare spirits, and detailed techniques. The menu is always rotating and features both classic and inventive cocktails — sometimes with a theatrical twist like smoke, fire, or unexpected garnishes. Reservations are highly encouraged, if not required. Walk-ins are allowed sometimes (via the “walk-up” sign), but you have to get lucky with availability.
