When a Texas football legend returns to the Forty Acres, it’s always something special. But when that legend reads from a children’s book he co-wrote with his wife? That’s something amazing.
Longhorn alum and former NFL star Derrick Johnson and his wife, Brittni have released a children’s book called “Super DJ Saves Field Day” that’s fun for the whole family. It’s a beautiful mix of superhero adventure and real-life values, inspired by Derrick’s own path from Waco to UT to the NFL. In the story, a dad transforms into a superhero to help kids unlock their strengths and face challenges head-on. The message is clear: being a hero doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being your best self.
That message really hits home. At a reading at the University Co-Op on August 16, Johnson read aloud to a crowd of families and you could see all the kids in attendance light up. Parents too!
Giving Back, On and Off the Page
The event was not only about a book. It was about giving back. Through his Defend the Dream Foundation, Johnson has already helped provide thousands of books and built reading spaces in schools across Texas and Kansas City.
The UT Co-op couldn’t have been a better setting for the event. The Co-op does more than sell gear. Every dollar goes back to student scholarships, and you could feel that same spirit of giving all over this event. There was laughter, learning and a line of little fans eager to get their book signed by a true hometown hero.
If your kids haven’t read “Super DJ Saves Field Day” yet, it’s absolutely worth picking up. It’s fun, empowering and full of heart – just like the Johnsons themselves.
