Adventure in Austin: Shoal Creek Greenbelt

Few things amaze me more than a well trained animal. How do they know how to behave so well? “Owner, how did you do this? How is this dog so great?” is a consistent train of thought while I’m outside in Austin. It is no different at Shoal Creek Greenbelt. There is a leash free section of this greenbelt, which would be a great draw for dog owners. (Know that I would love to have first hand experience for you here, but it definitely seems popular for actual dog owners!)

There is plenty of parking throughout the greenbelt and on this particular Tuesday, I wanted to go a little later in the day to see some more spectacular light. Side note: you can read about how I love sweet light in these posts about 360 Overlook and Mount Bonnell. As a plug for the greatest time of day, try and go as close to sunset as you can!

These signs above showcase the landmarks at each side of this trail: Town Lake to the South and 38th up North. From one end to the other, the pathway is approximately three and a quarter miles. The entrance and parking lot that I used is further north and just a few blocks from 38th.

This pathway is completely paved, except when the path stops for a bit at 5th Street. At that point, you can hop up on the street or be adventurous and walk straight through the creek.

I loved this pathway. It’s completely accessible, less crowded than some more popular trails, and seems like a consistent spot for Austinites. I could see coming here on the way home from work; it’s right off of downtown and a straight shot running north that could allow you to do a six mile loop, no problem. Be aware that there is a leash free zone and dogs can be seen running and fetching to their heart’s content throughout the trail.
