February is rolling along and we’ve got the best family friendly events to get your weekend going! From celebrating the Lunar New Year to Black History Month to the Blanton’s new permanent exhibit and the Austin Chronicle’s pet issue, these are the top 10 FREE events happening in and around Austin this week.

- Little Seedlings Storytime: Lunar New Year
Friday, Feb. 16 | from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Asian American Resource Center, 8401 Cameron Rd.
On the day of the 2018 Lunar New Year, celebrate the year of the dog at the Asian American Resource Center and listen to the stories about our long time loyal friends, dogs, and their inspiring stories! You will create a Lunar New Year’s drum and celebrate with fun sounds after the stories.
- DESPICABLE ME 3 Free Outdoor Screening
Friday, Feb. 16 | from 6:30 to 9 p.m. | The Community Cinema at Community First! Village, 9301 Hog Eye Rd.
Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a FREE movie night at Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening of Despicable Me 3. Get there as early as 6:30 to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks. Hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase (cash preferred). The event is FREE, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated. Donations can be made electronically when RSVPing to this event.
- Snakes of Central Texas (Lockhart)

Local snake relocator and educator, Keelan Smith, is bringing his snakes to Lockhart State Park! Learn about these amazing animals, and meet them up close! All ages welcome. No registration required. Program will be held inside the park Recreation Hall. Please arrive a few minutes early to give yourself time to check into the park and drive up to our Rec Hall. Regular park entrance fees apply ($3/adult, FREE for children 12 & under). If the office is closed when you arrive, please use the self-pay station to check in.
- Storybook Dance Making

Dance with your family to live music, play games, and enjoy a storybook reading. Storybook Dance Making classes include a warm up, check-in activity, game, storybook reading, and dance making activity. Each lesson is aligned with the National Core Standards for Dance Education and taught by a Dance Waterloo artist. This class is best for families with children ages 4-7. Stick around afterwards to snack, sip, or shop at in.gredients!
- Black History Month Kids Day

Family event features crafts, stories, and activities meant to introduce kids and families to the importance of Black History Month.
- Liberty! Equality! & Fireworks!

On Saturday at 2 p.m., Pollyanna Theatre, the Long Center’s resident theatre company, returns to the LBJ Library with their acclaimed production of Gregory S. Perrin’s Liberty! Equality! And Fireworks! The program is FREE, open to the public, and intended for students in grades 3-7.
- FREE, hands-on science fun for the entire family

AAAS Family Science Days is a FREE public science event that offers an array of hands-on family and child-friendly activities. It is held during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting, the largest general scientific conference in the world. The 2018 AAAS Family Science Days event will be held Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center. Family Science Days features interactive booths appropriate for K-12 children and their families, highlighting diverse areas of science, as well as a live stage show and the chance to talk with scientists.
- Official Public Opening: Ellsworth Kelly’s “Austin”

Join the Blanton for this FREE celebration of “Austin,” the monumental last work by renowned American artist Ellsworth Kelly. The museum is thrilled to have this beautiful building as a cornerstone work of art in the permanent collection and look forward celebrating its opening with you.
