Summer Movie Roundup – Here’s Where to Catch a Free or Cheap Flick in Austin and Beyond

Whether you’re watching under the stars or inside enjoying the crisp, cool AC, summer is a fantastic time to catch a film. Of course, seeing it for free is even better! Don’t want to pay the high ticket price at the theater? We hear you. That’s why we’ve rounded up all the FREE and cheap summer movie events happening in Austin (and beyond).

Alamo Kids Camp
Alamo Drafthouse, locations vary
School is out and that means it’s time for Kids Camp! Kids Camp is an affordable way for families to watch great films together all summer at the Alamo Drafthouse.  Tickets are super cheap ($1-$5) and 100% of ticket sales benefit great local nonprofits. It’s an easy way to teach kids about giving back to the community while enjoying some family fun. Most Kids Camp screenings are ages 3 and up, but some locations are All Ages – please check here for local policies. Regular no talking/texting policies apply and noisy families may be asked to leave. Kids Camp shows take place every day (with some exceptions) in matinee time-slots, at almost every Alamo Drafthouse location from the beginning of June through August. Moviehouse & Eatery FREE Summer Kids Camp

Movie House & Eatery now has two locations in Austin to enjoy their Summer Kids Camp! Join for FREE kids films all summer long! Tickets are available first come, first served at 9 a.m, and all movies start at 10 a.m. Check out the full summer schedule here. Family Film Festival (Georgetown)
City Lights Schulman Theatre, 420 Wolf Ranch Pkwy, Georgetown
Every Tuesday from June 6 – August 13, 2019. Doors open at 9 a.m. and shows start at 10 a.m. Tickets are 50¢ and seating is limited. Ticket sales benefit the Boys & Girls Club.

Family Film Festival (Bastrop)
Film Alley Bastrop, 1600 Chestnut St, Bastrop
Every Tuesday from June 4 – August 13, 2019. Doors open at 9 a.m. and shows start at 10 a.m. Tickets are 50¢ and seating is limited. Ticket sales benefit Down Home Ranch.

Free Outdoor Screenings at Community First! Village
9301 Hogs Eye Rd.
Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to free movie nights on Fridays at Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening. While there you can explore Community First! Village and enjoy your favorite movie snacks from the Community Grille. Burgers, french fries, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase (cards and cash accepted!). The event is free, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated.

Austin Parks Foundation Movies in the Park

Austin Parks Foundation’s Movies in the Park is a free series of films in partnership with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Rolling Roadshow. For over 10 years, APF has brought movies to neighborhood parks across Austin ensuring Austinites of all backgrounds have access to free outdoor entertainment. Get more info here.

Summer Family Film Series
Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 Congress Ave.
The Bullock Museum presents a Summer Family Film Series. You will find some old favorites, and discover some soon to be. This year’s lineup includes The Iron Giant, Lilo and Stitch, and Wall-E. Admission ranges from $5 – 8.

Summer Kids Series: Outdoor Movie Night
Austin Humane Society, 124 W. Anderson Ln.
Grab your picnic basket and load up your pack for a family-friendly movie night at the Austin Humane Society. These once a month events happening in June and July will feature an animal-themed movie fit for the entire family. Plus, we’ll have concessions, games, and kid’s activities, too. Movie nights will be held outside on the AHS lawn. The movie will start at sundown. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome to join the fun! In the event of rain, the movie will be shown inside the AHS Auditorium.

Movies in the East
Bryant Park, 7804 Skytree Dr.
Bring your friends and family to Bryant Park the first Friday of every month, plus two bonus nights in June and July, for Movies in The East! Movies will start at dusk.
