January is a busy month for Austinites. While Free Week may be over, there’s still a ton of free fun in Austin. To get you started, here are five more events to keep you busy straight through the start of next week.
5.) BLOOD SUGAR CANTO BOOK RELEASE
Jan 16 @ 6 p.m.
Come hear author Ire’ne Lara Silva read from her new book of poetry, “Blood Sugar Canto.” This book is a powerful hymn to life and to her own body by a “curandera-poet” struggling to transmute the fear and despair of diabetes into healing.
4.) STAR WARS FAMILY FUN FEST
Jan 16 @ 12 p.m.
Can’t get enough Star Wars? Then trek on down to the Bob Bullock Museum on Saturday for this family-friendly event. Enjoy lightsaber demonstrations, a screening of “The Force Unleased,” and maybe even build your own Star Wars LEGO masterpiece.
3.) BLAIR WOODS RESTORATION DAY
Jan 16 @ 9 a.m.
It’s MLK weekend, so what better way to get into the spirit of service than by helping to clean one of Travis County’s 3 wildlife sanctuaries? The restoration program will help re-establish a biodiverse woodland, prairie, and riparian corridor.
2.) DEMOCRATIC DEBATE WATCH PARTY @ WHIP IN
Jan 17 @ 8 p.m.
Are you shrillin’ for Hill or feelin’ the Bern? Either way, come on out to Whip In for some great food and political theater.
1.) TORCHY’S TACOS SOUTH CONGRESS GRAND OPENING
jan 18 @ 6 p.m.
Free tacos from Torchy’s. Need I say more? There’ll also be live music, giveaways, and more. It’s going to be a proper party!
