On Saturday, we invited Free Fun in Austin readers to join us in Patterson Park for an old fashioned day of play! Jamie of C.R.A.F.T. planned 10 fun games to play outside and CLIF Kid provided healthy snacks for all who wanted to Come Out to Play!
Before last week, I had never been to East Austin’s Patterson Park (located just across Airport Blvd. from its more famous neighbor, Mueller Lake Park), so I was eager to explore. The park offers a covered pavilion with picnic tables, a large playground, a free seasonal pool, a skate spot with a half pipe, tennis courts, a basketball court, a volleyball court, and nearby restrooms. Plus, this awesome flamingo mosaic on the side of the poolhouse!
But, most important for our Play Day, at 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning we had the entire place to ourselves. Families came out to jump rope, adorn the pavement with chalk art, show off their hula hooping skills, draw on our butcher paper table cloths, and have a grand time playing all manner of interactive games.
We played, we snacked, and we played some more. For nearly three hours, we enjoyed good company and the joy of an unscheduled Saturday morning in the park.
Parents got in on the action, too! My three boys taught me the (ever-changing, usually in their favor) rules to Four Square. Jamie showed her son Maxwell how to jump rope.
If you’d like to visit, Patterson Park is located at 4200 Brookview Road in East Austin. Skate boards and bikes are welcome! Play on the playground awhile, then hop on the walking trail that leads around the the park. For more information, visit Friends of Patterson Park.
Thanks to Jamie of C.R.A.F.T. for showing us just how much fun you can have with free outdoor games and thanks to CLIF Kids for providing us with the fuel we needed to play for hours in the Texas sun!
CLIF Kid challenges families to get outside and play every day! To demonstrate CLIF Kid’s commitment to play, CLIF Kid created an online Hub to inspire outdoor experiences that will encourage kids (and parents) to get outside and be kids. The CLIF Kid Play Hub provides tips and tools for parents and communities to promote play for kids of all ages. CLIF Kid wants kids to be kids, and encourages families to feed their adventure and discover new frontiers in the great outdoors—parks, backyards and city sidewalks. Join the conversation by sharing on your social channels how you get #outtoplay!
