Looking for a spot to sip on a marg and say “Salud!” to summer? We found the perfect place! Thompson Austin is home to a brand new rooftop restaurant and bar called Arriba Abajo.
Fittingly named after the popular Mexican toast, this lively new rooftop experience features dishes emphasizing the quintessential flavors of Oaxaca, Tulum and Yucatan. And that’s not all. The restaurant also hosts live music that you can enjoy with toasting pals with inventive craft beverages that go beyond the aforementioned margarita. Our personal faves are the Serenade Spritz (Lillet blanc, St-Germain, lemon, peach, cava) and the flavored mules (Strawberry basil, pineapple epazote, cucumber mint, and blood-orange rosemary).
As for the food, the menu boasts an impressive list of shareable starters. Guacamole and queso are served, of course. But the highlight for us is the Lobster Quesadilla Pizza. We weren’t sure about this one when we saw the list of ingredients. But, dang, they know what they’re doing because this item is mighty tasty.
Wondering about those ingredients? Here they are: chihuahua, cotija cheese, oaxaca, smoke tomatoes, jalapeno, chimichurri, crema, and epazote.
Other items on the starter list include short rib barbacoa taquitos, crispy rock shrimp, crudo and ceviche.
Though we were technically there for brunch, we enjoyed the starters so much that we never even got to the brunch specialities. Though next time, we’re definitely trying the power bowl (quinoa, fried egg, pistachio romesco, sweet potato, sweet plantains, chayote, edamame, and salsa macha).
