The author’s son with Move Your Tale founder Kristin Henn and Steve.

For those who don’t know, Steve is a poodle who performs with humans every Saturday morning at Austin’s ColdTowne Theater. His improv comedy show, What’s the Story, Steve?, is geared towards kids, who are also invited to be a part of the show.

The theater geek in me got super excited when I found out about this show. I was a theater major, and was even in a sketch comedy troupe in college, so this sounded right up my alley. I knew my bold and fearless 3-year-old would jump at the chance to get up on stage, but I wasn’t sure if my more reserved 6-year-old would be willing to participate.

At this morning’s show we got lucky. The majority of kids in attendance were around the same age as my eldest son and shared the same interest: Minecraft. The entire show wound up having a Minecraft theme, much to my son’s delight, so he was eager to jump up there and join in.

The adult cast was hilarious and delightful with the kids. They did a great job of moving the show along, while including the kids and incorporating their ideas. My husband and I laughed the entire time and our kids were completely engaged and uninhibited up on stage.

The show lasted about an hour, and when we left, both kids were begging to come back again next Saturday. My 6-year-old said going to the show made this the third best day of his life. The only days that beat it were going to Disneyland and getting his cast off his arm.

The show operates on a donation-based ticket system, so it’s not free. But the recommended donation of $3-$5 per person is definitely worth the hour of laughs and good times!

My kids happily volunteered to go up on stage right away! They got to pretend to be mice:
