Bike Hutto is very excited to be having some really wonderful events and opportunities throughout National Bike Month!  Established in 1956 and sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

At the April 16th City Council Meeting for the City of Hutto, Mayor Deborah Holland read a Mayoral Proclamation declaring that Hutto will be celebrating National Bike Month in May.  Throughout the month of May there will be multiple bicycle related events going on throughout Hutto, some of which tie into national dates and celebrations. Use the #BikeMonthHutto hashtag to share what you’re doing to help celebrate through bicycling!

Events:

Bike Hutto is excited to be teaming up with the Hutto Public Library for a celebration of the newly installed bike rack at the library! We will be starting off with a free Bike Maintenance 101 workshop led by Ben Block at 10am, followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony and kids’ activities. Plus, a great display of bicycling books for all ages will be up ALL MONTH LONG!  The weather should be beautiful, so make sure to grab the whole family and ride on over for this very special event!  Special thanks to the Hutto Public Library and the Friends of the Hutto Public Library for all their help in putting this together!

BikeHutto_NationalBikeSchoolDay_2015MAY 6, 2015   NATIONAL BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY

As part of National Bike Month, schools and communities around the country will celebrate the fourth annual National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Join in the fun by having you or your child bike to and from school that day! Remember to be safe. Helmets are recommended. Stay on bike paths and sidewalks. Obey the crossing guards.

Why bike to school?
It’s fun! Walking and bicycling bring a sense of joy and independence.

Healthier habits. The trip to school is a chance for children (and adults!) to get the physical activity they need.

Cleaner environment. Replacing car trips to school with walking or bicycling can reduce congestion and air-polluting emissions. Passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, and SUVs together account for 62 percent of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. 1. The transportation sector is responsible for one third of all carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. 2. Air quality is measurably better at schools located in neighborhoods with integrated street and sidewalk networks, and these schools have more students arriving by bicycle and on foot.

Promotes safety. Building sidewalks, providing education programs and adding traffic-calming measures are some of the ways to improve safety. Encouraging walking and bicycling to school can help build support for infrastructure improvements for the trip to school and the broader community.

Community benefits. Reducing traffic congestion and creating a sense of neighborhood, by being outside walking and bicycling, benefit the community.

BikeHutto_NationalBiketoWorkDay_2015MAY 11-15, 2015  NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK WEEK / DAY

May 11th-15th is National Bike to Work Week, with May 15th being National Bike to Work Day. With increased interest in healthy, sustainable and economic transportation options, it’s not surprising that the number of bicycle commuters has grown. On the 15th, make an effort to bike to work if it is possible (and safe). And if you are unable, at least try to use the bike for transportation sometime that week!

Some fun facts about commuting to work:

  • Bicycle commuting burns an average of 540 calories per hour.
  • The average person loses 13 pounds in the first year of commuting by bike.
  • A daily 4-mile bike commute will save about 66 gallons of fuel per year.
  • With 350 calories, a bicyclist can travel 10 miles, a pedestrian 3.5 miles, and an automobile 100 feet.
  • If the average person biked to work or shopping once every two weeks instead of driving, we could prevent the pollution of close to one billion gallons of gasoline from entering the atmosphere every year.
  • Since 2000, bike commuting has grown by 62 percent.
  • There were 882,198 bike commuters in 2013.
  • From 2000 to 2013, there was a 62% growth in the number of Americans commuting by bike.
  • 83% of Americans say obesity is their number one health concern.

BikeHutto_SocialRidePicnic_051615MAY 16, 2015 11AM-1PM   HUTTO LAKE PARK SOCIAL RIDE AND PICNIC

Bike over to Hutto Lake Park on Saturday, May 16th for a social picnic and ride through the park. Bring your own meat to grill and we will have potato salad, coleslaw, waters, etc.

If Hutto Lake Park is too long of a ride for the kiddos, drive on over with the bikes on the back so you can still enjoy riding around the lake!  The park includes a mile-long trail around the lake.  Plus, there is a dock for fishing and a bird blind for birdwatching.

Make sure to let us know if you are coming so we know how many people to expect and how many picnic tables to snag when we get there!

NATIONAL BIKE CHALLENGE

The National Bike Challenge is a nationwide event uniting thousands of current bicyclists—and encouraging countless new riders. In its simplest form it is a logging center for users to record miles ridden, and be part of the national community of bicyclists. It is a free and easy way to challenge yourself, colleagues and the greater community to ride more. Users compete on a local, state and national level. The Challenge aims to unite 75,000 riders to pedal 35 million miles from May 1, 2015 to September 30, 2015. The Challenge is a successful partnership between PeopleForBikes and Kimberly-Clark’s Scott Natural Brand.

Bike Hutto’s mission is to encourage and foster a community environment within Hutto in which bicyclists of all ages can socialize, receive safety education, and voice their needs for building better bicycle friendly infrastructure.  Bike Hutto was formed by Jessica Romigh in October 2014 after she attended the City of Hutto’s Setting the Table Workshop and saw a need within the Hutto community to create a fun and informative group for local bicyclists.
