The owners of Cross Plants and Produce in Kyle, Jennifer and Nathan Cross, have created this simple and laid back lifestyle quite consciously. After both having high-profile and stressful careers for most of their lives, they’re committed to taking time to unplug. And not just from the hustle and bustle of life, but from the toxic fast food culture of it as well.
The Cross family’s vision is admirable — to create a community store that welcomes the entire family. Children are encouraged to play outside on the many natural playscapes provided and parents are given hassle-free time to shop the store’s hand-picked fresh produce, grass fed meats, homemade cheeses, and other local finds.
Both owners tend the store daily and are quick to say hello and offer any assistance you might need. As a true mom and pop, they both wear many hats. When donning their certified master gardeners’ hats, they’re happy to guide you through plant selection and offer gardening advice that’s specific to your situation.
As natural grocers, they are passionate advocates for eating healthy, local, and organic. Customers are quick to realize this isn’t any old food store. This is the home of a trusted friend. A friend who just happens to enjoy hand-picking all the best farmer’s market finds for you and your loved ones to enjoy.
And finally, as parents themselves they understand the importance of enriching childrens’ lives through art, gardening, and seasonal fun.
My children and I visited during pumpkin season and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the seasonal activities scattered throughout the tiny farm. They played a bean bag toss game, climbed the hay bale sculptures, and rummaged through the pumpkin patch searching for the perfect pumpkin to take home. Being animal lovers, visiting with Spot and Shorty (the resident miniature horse and donkey), Peanut the bunny, and frolicking with the playful dogs were highlights.
If you’re looking for easy family fun, Cross Plants and Produce is a great way to de-stress and relax with the kiddos. Grab a cup of their local roasted coffee that’s always brewed fresh, indulge in their homemade caramel apples, and relax at the picnic tables as the kids wear themselves out exploring the outdoor playscapes.
Cross Plants and Produce is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.; they are closed Monday. The store is located at 705 North Highway 81, Kyle, TX 78640.
