It’s Memorial Day Weekend and school is out for Summer! There are a lot of Fun Free Events happening through Monday for Memorial Day. Here’s a round up of the best of the best. For a full list of free events, check out our calendar.
Here Are The Top Free Memorial Day Events Happening This Weekend: May 26 through May 29, 2023
Close Assault 1968 Vietnam War Living History Program
Saturday, May 27 and Sunday May 28 | Various Times | Camp Mabry, 2200 West 35th Street
Remember the true meaning of Memorial Day with this look back at the Vietnam War. Close Assault 1968 honors the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans. The free program features members of the Texas Military Forces Living History Detachment exhibiting the uniform and equipment worn by the American soldiers. In addition, the two-day event will provide guests the opportunity to witness firing demonstrations and watch an assault on a bunker with an M113.
The event will take place RAIN or SHINE. Bleacher seating is available. Showtimes are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The program runs for about 1.5 hours. The museum will be open 10-4 each day. Both the program and admission to the museum are FREE.

Treaty Oak Memorial Day Party

Memorial Day Weekend Cookout for Folds of Honor

Come by the event tents on the main walkway at CYC for some custom-crafted hamburgers and sausage wraps. They will be accepting donations for Folds of Honor, a foundation that provides educational scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members. Their motto says it best… Honor Their Sacrifice. Educate Their Legacy. Take your friends and family by for lunch before you head out on the boat, and make a donation for an amazing cause!

Senior Smiles Art Exhibit
Saturday, May 27 | From 1 to 3 p.m. | Austin RNC, 6909 Burnet Lane
All are invited to stop by Memorial Day weekend to celebrate our local seniors and experience the art of dot mandala painting! As part of the celebration, attendees will get to try to the technique themselves with a fun dot mandala craft activity led by an art instructor. This is a family-friendly event, free and open to the public. A reception with light refreshments will be provided.

Pre Memorial Day Concert

Join for the annual pre-Memorial Day band concert with plenty of patriotic “flag waving” tunes on the Veterans Memorial Plaza at Sun City. 700 folding chairs will be placed at the Memorial. Guests are also invited to bring folding chair(s) to sit under the trees. In case of rain, the Memorial Day events will be held in the Social Center Ballroom and seating will be limited to 600 to comply with fire code.

Memorial Day Ceremony and Reception

The annual Memorial Day Ceremony will honor the men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country and our freedom. The guest speaker will be Governor Greg Abbott.
Killeen Memorial Day Ceremony
Monday, May 29 | At 10 a.m. | Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen
The Area Veterans Advisory Committee will sponsor the Killeen Memorial Day Ceremony to be held at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. The public is invited to attend. Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash-King will give the welcome. Veterans organizations are encouraged to attend and bring their post colors and wreaths by 9:30. The wreaths will be laid at 10:45 a.m. followed by a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
2023 Memorial Day Salute

Join the City of Taylor for our annual Memorial Day Salute honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. This year will feature a Tolling Ceremony by the Central Texas Base United States Submarine Veterans. Please note, the ceremony will take place at the Murphy Park Pavilion this year.
Memorial Day Ceremony in San Marcos
Monday, May 29 | at 10 a.m. | 450 E. Hopkins Street, San Marcos
The annual Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at the Hays County Veterans Memorial. Veterans and community members will recite the names of all Hays County Veterans who were Killed in Action since WWI. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the dedication of the Hays County Veterans Memorial. Local Veteran organizations, the San Marcos High School Air Force ROTC, and the Aquarena Symphonic Band will be participating in the ceremony. Limited parking is available on Riverside Drive and Peace Avenue. Additional parking is available at the San Marcos Activity Center. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the San Marcos Activity Center.
Memorial Day Ceremonies at Heroes Memorial Park
Monday, May 29 | at 10 a.m. and 8:20 p.m. | 4301 Benner Road, Kyle
The City of Kyle invites community members to honor and remember all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29 for two ceremonies honoring our fallen Veterans. The first ceremony, hosted by the City of Kyle and Kyle VFW Post 12058 begins at 10 a.m. at Heroes Memorial Park and includes an invocation, the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, remarks by Hays County Veteran Services Officer Jude Prather, an Honor Guard, and the playing of Taps. After the event, local Scouts and Veterans will travel to the Kyle Cemetery to place flags on Veterans’ graves. The second ceremony, hosted by the City of Kyle will begin at sunset (approximately 8:20 p.m.) and includes the playing of TAPS and a reading of the names of Kyle fallen Veterans.

Memorial Day Remember and Honor Event
Monday, May 29 | 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Yonders Point, Old Settlers Park, 3101 Aten Loop, Round Rock
The Round Rock Veteran’s Coalition and City of Round Rock invite the entire community to honor and remember those who sacrificed all for our country at a Memorial Day Ceremony taking place at the new Yonders Point Plaza. The ceremony will include Major General Retired Patrick Hamilton of the U.S. Army as our guest speaker, the City of Round Rock Police Department Honor Guard and Fire Department’s Pipe and Drums. Our Nation’s Colors will be displayed by the Stony Point High School’s JR ROTC, while vocal artist Michaela Watson sings our National Anthem and Combat Veteran Corpsman Shannon Book singing God Bless America. Stony Point JR ROTC will also provide a TAPS Bugler and a live 21 Gun Salute to honor all those who have paid the ultimate price for our Nation. Immediately following the ceremony please join us for light refreshments.
