Enjoy the Wildflower Center for free on Sunday, July 26, 2015 for Tribute Day, a celebration of the Center’s founder, Lady Bird Johnson, and her accomplishments. Mrs. Johnson was a catalyst for the environmental focus of the Johnson administration. The date of Tribute Day corresponds with the day that President Johnson gave the First Lady a copy of 50 pens used to sign environmental and beautification laws on July 26, 1968.
This year’s Tribute Day will include a display of a portrait of Mrs. Johnson by Norman Rockwell in the McDermott Learning Center. The painting served as the model for her White House portrait. On display alongside the “Nature of Art” exhibit in that space will also be green and white canvas gloves that Mrs. Johnson used during her Washington, D.C, beautification efforts, and her wildflower field guide.
Admission will be FREE for visitors. Enjoy exhibits, children’s activities and more from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday as the Center pays tribute to the Environmental First Lady.
Schedule of Events
- Story time – 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Little House. Hear a story about Lady Bird Johnson and her life growing up in Texas.
- Make seed paper – All day. Create paper infused with wildflower seeds to plant at home.
- Discovery cart – All day. Learn what’s in bloom on site, all day in the Visitors Gallery.
- Behind-the-scenes indoor tour – 11:30 a.m. Join volunteer Marie Bassett on a tour of the Wildflower Center’s interior spaces, which feature historic items owned by Lady Bird Johnson.
- Memorabilia display – All day. See gardening gloves that Mrs. Johnson used during the 1965 beautification effort in Washington D.C. while she was First Lady, and the Norman Rockwell painting of her that was used to model what became her White House portrait. In the McDermott Learning Center, where images from the Wildflower Center’s Art Collection are also on display.
Lunch, drinks, snacks and ice cream will be available for purchase in the Wildflower Café.
