Austin is making big waves in the faith community, as a historic event happened recently. The congregation at Agudas Achim synagogue in northwest Austin invited a woman to write the new Torah scroll for their synagogue. This is the first time that a woman has written the Torah in Texas.
Every Jewish congregation must write a Torah, and the congregation at Agudas Achim now has more than 700 families who congregate there.
Jen Taylor Friedman is a Torah scribe visiting Austin from Montreal. She is helping the congregation to gather as a community to participate in this very spiritual process.
“Anytime a congregation gets a new Torah, it’s a beautiful thing. and it’s particularly nice if you can write your torah as a community … not just buy a Torah from the store, but it’s nice if you can be part of that creative process,” said Friedman.
