It may seem as though you just got the kids out of the house and back in school but it’s already time for a day off. Though for many, it’s actually a day on because the reason for the holiday is to commemorate the life and good works of Martin Luther King, Jr.
If you’re looking to make it a day of service, here are seven events where you can pay tribute on MLK Day 2020.
MLK Community Celebration
Monday, January 20 | From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. | UT Campus, MLK Statue on East Mall, and Huston-Tillotson University, 900 Chicon Street
The Annual Community March celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in the city. It kicks off with a short program at the MLK Statue on the University of Texas campus. At the conclusion of the program at the MLK Statue they will the south steps of the Capitol for a rally. After the Capitol program, the march will proceed to the historic Huston-Tillotson University, where exciting activities are planned! Free Admission on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Monday, January 20 | From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Lyndon Baines Johnson Library, 2313 Red River Street
The LBJ Presidential Library will be offering free admission to all visitors on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In addition to our permanent exhibitions, the special exhibition currently on view is: “Motown: The Sound of Young America.” This is a great opportunity to see the exhibition! Its 10-month run at the library ends Sunday, January 26.
Celebrate MLK Day with Safe in Austin
Monday, January 20 | From 1 to 3 p.m. | Safe in Austin, 14601 Honeycomb Drive, Leander
The family run non-profit, rescuing animals and children, is located just outside of Austin, TX. Everyone is welcome to celebrate MLK Day no matter of age or abilities, who you are, what you look like, or the choices you choose to make! Friendship is unconditional and they can’t wait to meet you, introduce you to the animals that needed us, and tell you about how they have helped heal children that needed them even more! Meet and love on horses, dogs, chickens, cats, goats, ponies, pigs, turkeys, rabbits, tortoises and more! Learn about their rescue stories and how they are now rescuing us right back! You can go on a hike with a breathtaking 180 degree hill country view, walk through our fairy trail, and enjoy a safe space to be with family and friends! The recommended donation per family is $25 or more and fresh fruits and veggies are always appreciated to go towards that week’s feed! Closed toed shoes are necessary, and since they are a free range rescue, outside animals are prohibited during public events.

Annual MLK Day Of Service
Monday, January 20 | From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Urban Roots Farm, 7651 Delwau Lane
Join Urban Roots’ youth leaders to answer that question in service to the community. You will celebrate Dr. King’s legacy with two special community volunteer mornings. They offer you the opportunity to make a difference in your community, empower young leaders, and learn about our sustainable local urban farm. The goal is to offer everyone that steps on to the 3.5 acre farm an opportunity to grow! No experience required. Each volunteer must be registered before arriving the the farm.
Austin Urban Technology Movement MLK Day of Service With The United Way
Monday, January 20 | From 9 to 11 a.m. | United Way for Greater Austin, 2000 East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
MLK Jr. Day of Service will begin with a kick-off breakfast at United Way for Greater Austin at 9 a.m. Please arrive on time to enjoy breakfast tacos, coffee and juice before opening remarks at 9:15 AM. Volunteers will then disperse from the kick-off breakfast.
MLK Day of Service at Buttermilk Creek and Park
Monday, January 20 | From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Buttermilk Creek and Park, Located behind the St. John Community Center/ St. John Branch Library, 7500 Blessing Avenue
On Monday, January 20, 2020, millions will come together to volunteer and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, who never stopped asking the question, “What are you doing for others?” The MLK Jr Day of Service is a moment to work together to fulfill King’s vision for a better America – it’s a day “on” instead of a day off. Join the River Watchers for our MLK Jr Day of Service event to help clean and restore Buttermilk Creek in Buttermilk Park, with our friends at the St. John Neighborhood Association! Volunteer activities will include: removing trash from the Buttermilk Park Greenbelt and creek area, planting native plants, and learning about water quality. All tools and supplies will be provided.
Sapling Day Giveaway: Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Monday, January 20 | From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Huston-Tillotson University, 900 Chicon Street
Join TreeFolks at Huston Tillotson University for our fifth Sapling Giveaway of the season in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day! We will be giving away multiple varieties of saplings to the Central Texas community. There are no requirements to receive your free tree except to show up and pick your tree, and then promise to care for your tree for up to two years.
