ZACH Theatre, in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance, presents This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing.
From ZACH Theatre: In this modern-day fairy tale, three young sisters are left in the forest by their woodcutter father and three resolutions are made: One sister takes one path, one sister a different path, and the third decides to stay right where she is. After twenty years of wild adventure, heartbreak, and big victories, the three meet again as women. An imaginative blend of creative puppetry, live music, and fantastical storytelling, this is a story of family and friendship.
The Whisehunt Theater is an intimate venue constructed as a center stage with 360-surround audience seating, allowing each seat to have a perfect view of the stage. The actors do a nice job of rotating around the theater so every audience-member feels a part of the performance.
The imaginative acting, costumes, and props in this play transport you into the story, yet the play keeps the staging simple so the characters become the main story-tellers. The creative sound effects, shadow puppets and enthusiastic performances of the actors really make the story shine, and the 55-minute show time is a great length to keep young audience members engaged. We do recommend keeping the age recommendation of 7 and up in to consideration, as some of the storylines may not resonate with younger children. And bonus – each child receives a program that points out literary elements from the play plus other fun educational activities.
