Got a creative kid who’s into technology? If so, be sure to put SX Create on your calendar. Hackers and DIY-ers unite at this family-friendly SXSW event that’s all about using new technologies to do creative and revolutionary things.
It’s all scheduled to happen at the Palmer Events Center on March 11–13, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Best of all, SX Create is FREE to attend with a Guest Pass (get yours here)!
As the “hardware hacking and maker arm of SXSW,” this year’s event promises more space, more fun, and even more hands-on excitement, including everything from 3D printing to drones to biohacking and much more.
The list of SX Create participants and exhibitors includes Austin’s own National Instruments and Silicon Labs, along with many other local, national and international outfits. Make plans to stop by and create! In years past, there have been plenty of activities to keep visitors busy, from making duct tape wallets to crafting wooden race cars. Most hand-on projects are free, but some are available for a small fee.
There are also a ton of exciting and informative sessions to attend. Here are just a few highlights from the SX Create panel schedule:
- 3D Imaging in a Swarm of Drones (Fri. 3/11, 5 p.m.): Attendees of this session will learn how an intelligent swarm of flying drones can be applied to solve 3D modeling as they are introduced to the software and methods for creating 3D models using still camera imagery and the intelligent swarm of drones used to capture the images. They will discuss the future and need of high-quality modeling in nature, and finish with a discussion on where to go next.
- E-Textiles: Fashion Meets Tech at SciTech Kids (Sat. 3/12, 12:30 p.m.): At this hands-on session, attendees will learn about making gadgets that bring together craft, electronics and programming as they explore the intersection of tech, fashion and craft, and how 3D printing is changing the future of the fashion industry.
- Get Messy in the Library: Art, Making and Tinkering (Sun. 3/13, 12:30 p.m.): This session traces creative inspiration to the library as it explores the Library as Incubator movement, and teaches attendees about residency programs, self-publishing platforms, workshops and other services with and for artists and makers of all skill levels. This session will include an in-depth exploration of Madison Public Library’s pop-up Bubbler program, where local creatives are employed to offer hands-on activities for people of all ages.
