My family and I are fair weather farmers market goers. We prefer to go when the weather is indeed fair and, although we love to support local businesses, we don’t always end up buying a bunch of homegrown meats and vegetables. But still, I love a good farmers market.
This was our first time at the Cedar Park Farmers Market, one of the two markets run by the Texas Farmers Market. The Cedar Park market operates on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., rain or shine, in the Lakeline Mall parking lot (between Sears and Dillards).
The weather could not have been more perfect for a stroll through the market. The market is made up of three rows of tents, allowing for two large aisles for browsing and sampling. Most of the produce, meats, cheeses, and other foods were on the outer rows, with artists, artisans, and flowers in the middle row.
The kids had a blast approaching various tables and asking what the strange-looking items were. When my youngest called a tomato a strawberry, I knew we were in trouble. We picked up a bottle of fresh squeezed citrus juice from on booth and some delicious looking organic, free range eggs from another. One egg was almost twice the size as the others and barely fit in the carton!
Vendors at the Cedar Park market included local farmers from in and around Austin, as well as many local bakeries and other businesses. Visitors can grab a coffee from Casa Brazil Coffees, or a cinnamon roll from Artisan Pizza Oven (get there early!). We also came across Round Rock Honey, Sweetish Hill Bakery, Cake and Spoon, New World Gelato & Sorbet, and many more. There are also tons of local restaurants with booths, from CowCow Burgers to Kalbi Korean BBQ, and the Peached Tortilla food truck is always a popular stop.
One tent you do not want to miss at the Cedar Park market is the sample tent. Yes, you can stop by and sample the market! I sampled some amazing creamed honey and several types of hummus and dips. My 3-year-old was especially lucky to snag some samples of Mardi Gras king cake from Sweetish Hill Bakery.
The market is truly a festival of food, but don’t forget about entertainment! Live music radiated throughout the market, two small ponies provided pony rides, and a very talented clown balloon artist delighted the kids!
We had a great time at the market, and I see many more trips in our future this spring. And if you must know, that granddaddy egg was delicious.
