Long before “Let it Go” became the anthem of a certain icy princess, it was the mantra of a rock and roll band out of New Orleans called Cowboy Mouth. Odds are you’ve heard their song “Jenny Says,” with the chorus that chants, “Let it go! Let it go! Let it go! When the world is coming down on me, I let it go!” Those lyrics sum up every reason why you need to see Cowboy Mouth live at the NOLA, Texas Food and Music Festival.
I grew up in the ‘burbs of New Orleans and attended my first Cowboy Mouth concert as a teenager a couple of decades ago. I’ve seen them a few dozen times over the years and while lots has changed in my life since that first show, they remain a constant. Every single show is an energizing, joyful celebration of life’s ups and downs. I laugh; I cry; I sing; I shout; I make a general fool of myself along with a crowd my temporary BFFs; and I leave feeling like the best version of myself. Every. Single. Time.
This week I had the profoundly entertaining privilege of chatting with Fred LeBlanc, the band’s frontman and drummer. He revealed that his childhood dream was to do exactly what’s he’s doing today–playing music and giving it his all. “I’m really just a big kid,” he explained, and staying in touch with the enthusiasm of his five year-old self is a key to his success.
Fred is the best kind of crazy on stage–sweaty, shoeless, uninhibited, and bursting with contagious positive energy. When he encourages the audience to release their inhibitions, it’s always with the promise (100% true) that they’ll never look as ridiculous as he does. His music is a tool to move energy, to uplift his fans, to help them seize the best of themselves, and to let it out–let it go! Whether playing for a crowd of 10 or 10,000, Cowboy Mouth (which also includes John Thomas Griffith, Matt Jones, and Brian Broussard) strives to give every person in the audience a real, visceral, lesson in living life in the moment.
On Sunday, April 3rd, Cowboy Mouth will be at Cedar Park Center for the NOLA, Texas Food and Music Festival. I’ll be there with my hubs and kids in tow, ecstatic for my sons to finally experience Cowboy Mouth live.
