Guadalupe Maravilla (b. 1976, San Salvador, El Salvador; lives and works in New York) grounds his sculpture, painting, performance, and large-scale installation in activism and healing, informed by his personal story of migration, illness, and recovery. For Mariposa Relámpago, the artist transformed a school bus with handmade and selected objects that retrace his journey from El Salvador to the United States as an unaccompanied youth. Also incorporated are several gongs that when activated by Maravilla and fellow sound healers, energize the piece as a vibrational sound healing instrument.

The Contemporary Austin’s presentation of Guadalupe Maravilla: Mariposa Relámpago is organized by Alex Klein, Head Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs. The sculpture will travel to venues across Texas through a partnership between Ballroom Marfa (November 4, 2023 – March 16, 2024), The Contemporary Austin – Laguna Gloria (April 4 – November 3, 2024), and the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston (November 20, 2024 – April 27, 2025).
