This hilarious comedy is directed by Billy Wilder and stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Along with Wilder’s film Double Indemnity, this screwball comedy is considered one of the best films of all time.
In 1989, the Library of Congress selected it as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Released during the later years of the Hays Code of censorship in Hollywood, which did not allow for films to include themes or representations of queerness such as cross-dressing, it was one of the first films to be released without approval from the code enforcers and still become a huge financial and critical success. The film is considered one of the major reasons for the eventual dissolvement of the code of censorship, which was replaced with the MPAA ratings system.
