The Art Galleries (TAG) at AustinCommunity College is proud to announce the Spring 2025 exhibition, American Roulette–Austin: Navigating Gun Culture in our Violent Society. The artist collective, American Roulette, seeks to open dialogue and foster discussions related to mass shootings and gun violence in the United States. Through exhibitions, the collective engages with communities by inviting local artists to submit artwork to be included in every exhibition. The selection of the works is juried by gallery curators and the American Roulette Collective.

American Roulette–Austin: Navigating Gun Culture in our Violent Society aims to give back to communities through experiencing the collective’s work and providing a space for reflection upon the country’s stance on gun violence. The goal is to spark a much needed dialogue through art so gallery visitors can explore differing opinions and perspectives surrounding this critical issue.

Artist Collective’s Statement:
Violence and disregard for life have become so ingrained in American society and culture (from police brutality and institutional abuse, to poverty and domestic violence) that our collective consciousness is now shaped by paranoia and fear. The media we choose to consume numbs us and the suffering endured by others becomes nothing more than flickering images on a screen, slowly turning our desensitizations to apathy and fascination. As artists, we seek to open dialog and foster discussion through our version of “activist” art. The best way to spur these conversations, especially with those of differing opinions, is to present provocative images and engage in the discourse that they initiate. Through the practices of artists from around the country, all making work about gun violence and how it impacts our society, we strive to bridge cultural and societal divides and demonstrate that this is an issue that affects all of us.
