Austin Nature & Science Center (15 Parks in 2015: #1)

Free Fun in Austin is excited to partner with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department this year, to encourage local families to get out and explore the many quality recreational, cultural and outdoor destinations Austin has to offer! With a goal of featuring 15 Parks in 2015, we will share new family-friendly experiences each month, and then invite you to come out and play with us!

15 Parks in 2015: Austin Nature & Science Center (#1)

One of our favorite spots for an anytime Austin adventure is the Austin Nature & Science Center in Zilker Park. Boasting six interactive, educational areas, from the indoor Trade Counter to the outdoor Dino Pit, families will discover plenty of free, hands-on fun. Borrow an Eco-Detective Kit from the front desk, visit the resident wildlife, dig for dino bones, and hit the trails for a nature hike!

Austin Nature & Science Center also hosts traveling exhibits, which change throughout the year. The current exhibit, The Robot Zoo, is so popular that the Center has extended its stay through January 27, 2015.

The Robot Zoo is a study of the form and function of real animals through their biomechanical counterparts – robots.  In The Robot Zoo, the “animals” are mechanical, programmable robots, displayed in the context of animal habitats. On display, you’ll see a bat, a chameleon, a giraffe, a grasshopper, a house fly, a platypus, a rhino and a giant squid.

Going through the The Robot Zoo, children will learn about shapes, movement, special body parts (like mouths) called adaptations, animals’ ability to sense and respond through touch, smell, sight and radar, why different textures and coloring are important for animals, and much more!

The Robot Zoo Playdate: Saturday, January 17, 2015, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

We invite you to join us at the Austin Nature & Science Center on Saturday morning!  Check out The Robot Zoo, observe a robotics team in action, make robotic art, and create a simple solar machine. This event is free!

Before you leave home, print off some Austin Nature & Science Center Bingo cards to make your outing even more fun.
