Calling all creative types, or anyone who has ever wanted to try their hand at drawing, painting, pottery, cartooning, Claymation… It’s time to let your inner artist out to play! Or, if not your own inner artist, that of someone you love.
The Contemporary Austin is giving one lucky Free Fun in Austin reader a FREE art class for an adult, teen or child!
All classes are offered at The Contemporary Austin Art School at Laguna Gloria, throughout the winter and spring. If you’ve never been to Laguna Gloria (at 3809 W. 35th St.), it’s a fantastic place to visit — for a $5 entry fee (free on Tuesdays; children under 18 are always free), you can get inspired by walking the 12-acre grounds, gazing at the gardens and sculptures, or even wandering over to nearby Mayfield Park to check out the peacocks that make their home there. (The purchase of an exhibition pass also gains you entry to the Contemporary Austin’s Jones Center on Congress Avenue.)

A wide variety of classes are available on a variety of dates throughout the winter and spring for adults, children and teens, as well as for parents and children ages 6–11 to take together. Here’s just a sampling of what’s available:
- Parents and children can learn together all about Claymation: “Shoot and edit your own projects with the instructor’s camera, tripod and Mac computer with iPhoto and iMovie. Or, bring your own to learn to integrate the process in your system.” (This class is offered on Sunday, 1/25/15, from 1–4 PM.)
- Adults interested in throwing pottery can take Wheelthrowing and Beyond: “A perfect class for all skill levels! Through class demonstrations and individual attention from the instructor, students will learn and create at their own pace. Beginners will be introduced to basic wheelthrown shapes such as cylinders, cups, and bowls. Experienced potters will expand their skills and explore forms such as lidded jars and large objects. All students can enjoy making unusual shapes by cutting, stacking, and altering pieces to make anything from oval dishes to tulip vases. Surface finishes including underglaze decoration and soda firing are available in this class.” (This eight-week class is offered Saturdays from 9 AM to noon on a variety of start dates throughout the winter and spring.)
- Kids ages 9–11 can take Cartooning: “Hone your drawing skills and turn those doodled creations into cartoon characters. Develop funny stories and jokes using panels to convey the passage of time. Create quick-to-reproduce black and white art. Explore the cartoon medium, craft your own cartoons, and practice lettering, perspective, timing, and expression in this popular class.” (This class is offered Saturdays from 1–3:30 PM, from 2/14/15 through 3/7/15.)
