Wyldwood, South Austin’s Hidden Music Venue

I had heard rumors about a live music venue, reminiscent of the first few years of Blues on the Green.   It does exist, and it is awesome.  Tucked away in deep South Austin, you can find The Wyldwood.

Wyldwood owners, Andrew and Amy Murphy, are live music fans.  Tired of having to go to clubs to hear great music, they decided to bring the music home. Wyldwood shows are hosted in the Murphys’ backyard.  The atmosphere is relaxed and the audience ranges from retirees, to couples, to families.

If you bring your kiddos to a Wyldwood show, there is plenty of outdoor exploring for them to do.  My daughter enjoyed watching the chickens and checking out the raised garden beds.  There is also an old tree house on the property; climb at your own risk!  (An extensive list of the “dangers” are listed on the Wyldwood Shows website.)

The bathroom situation at Wyldwood is great.  There is a separate building that houses two clean and adorably decorated restrooms.

I would recommend bringing bug spray, a blanket and chairs.  As the sun began to set, glow sticks were handed out to the children.  I cannot guarantee that this happens at every show; you may want to pick up a few boxes in the dollar bin at Target.

It really did feel magical watching the kids swinging and throwing the glow sticks in the field, while a live band played folk music.

Tips for attending a Wyldwood show:

  • Go to the Wyldwood Shows website to join the email list.
  • Typically, reservations for the next show open a few days after each completed show. If you are on the email list, you will be notified when the reservations go live.
  • Every concert sells out within a day or two, so you need to be on the ball!
  • Children are free; adults are $10.
  • 100% of the proceeds go directly to the band.
  • You are more than welcome to bring food and alcoholic beverages.
  • No dogs allowed.
