Friday, August 8th & Saturday, August 9th – 7pm
Threadgill’s South – 301 W. Riverside

Even music fans who didn’t care for the songs of the Grateful Dead would still respect their dedication to their fan base and their music. It’s how they were able to tour consistently for as long as they did and how events like the 4th annual Jerryfest can still draw a crowd, even 19 years after the Dead’s frontman Jerry Garcia passed away. This year’s two-night showcase not only celebrates the music of this most prolific of bands but also boasts some pretty cool special guests, as well.

The Friday evening show features Ray Benson and Katie Holmes (no, not that one) of Asleep at the Wheel, along with Gordy Quist of The Band of Heathens. The following Saturday features members of Wood and Wire. Whichever night sounds like more fun, tickets are $13 before the show and $15 at the door.

Saturday, August 9th – 8pm
The New Movement Theater – 616 Lavaca

Austin certainly has no shortage of live comedy experiences. That’s not a bad thing, but sometimes a real gem of a show gets lost in the shuffle. This Saturday, consider a change of pace and check out the New Movement Theater downtown for their “Made For TV Movie” special. This talented troupe of thespians will take suggestions from the live audience and create a film right before your eyes.

Admission is only $5. It’s ages 21 and up, but it’s also BYOB! How’s that for thrifty?

Saturday, August 9th – 7pm
Palmer Events Center – 900 Barton Springs

As we mentioned in our list of “15 Obligatory Experiences For Austin Newcomers“, a bout between two teams of Texas Roller Derby is not an event to miss. This Saturday, the Rhinestone Cowgirls hit the track to take on the Cherry Bombs. For two hours, fans will be able to enjoy mayhem on roller skates, live punk rock music and more audience participation than you can shake a stick at. Tickets are $15.

Saturday, August 9th – 10am
Fiesta Gardens – 2100 Jesse E. Segovia St.

It’s that time of year when the weather in Austin gets so hot that relocating to the surface of the sun doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. What’s the best way to beat the heat? Well, yes, never leaving the house works, too. We were thinking more along the lines of ice cream. It’s time for the eighth annual Austin Ice Cream Festival at Fiesta Gardens.

Come on out, bring the kids and prepare to stuff yourself silly with frozen treats from Blue Bell, Amy’s Ice Cream, GoodPops and more. There will be games, contests and live music from bands such as the Pacifist Ninjas.

Admission is $10 and comes with three ice cream tickets, good at any of the vendors at the festival. All ages and leashed pets are welcome, as well.

Sunday, August 10th- 8pm
Holy Mountain – 617 E. 7th St.

Featuring DJ Nate of Chicago and Austin’s own DJ Charlie, this all-ages event invites anyone to take the mic and show the crowd at Holy Mountain what kind of skills they have. Doors open at 8 and there’s no cover. So, even if you don’t plan on getting on stage, you can still spend the evening enjoying some free entertainment.
