Catch an outdoor family movie, view spectacular light installations on Waller Creek, honor our veterans at a parade and ceremony at the Capitol, celebrate art and creativity at one of several events around town, and learn a bit about languages! Weekend Top 10 FREE Events: November 10-12, 2017

  1. Community Cinema: Cars 3
    Friday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m. | Community First! Village, 9301 Hog Eye Rd
    Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy a special screening of Cars 3. Come as early as 6:30 p.m. to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks. Burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy, and drinks will be available for purchase (cash and cards accepted). Concession sales and tips help Community First! friends who will be serving you to earn a modest living income. Plus, stop by the Community Market to check out all the beautiful art and handcrafted products that Community First! residents make in the various micro-enterprise programs at the Village. Movie begins at approximately 7:30 p.m. Rated G. Reserve your FREE tickets here. A donation of $5 is greatly appreciated.
  2. Creek Show
    Fri. to Sun., November 10-12 from 6-10 p.m. | Waller Creek between 5th St and 8th St
    Creek Show, now in its fourth year, spans nine nights and includes six light-based, site-specific art installations, which will be installed on Waller Creek between 5th and 8th Streets. The community is invited to walk along Waller Creek to view the art designed to bring attention to the future revitalization of Waller Creek and its transformation into a series of urban parks. Family-friendly activities will be held at the Sabine Tree deck from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. Creek Show is FREE and open to the public.View complete schedule here.
  3. Austin Veterans Day Parade
    Saturday, November 11 at 9 a.m. | On Congress Ave between 7th St and the State Capitol
    The Austin Veterans Day Parade Committee welcomes you to this year’s parade. This is an all-volunteer event operating for over 15 years and designated as an official regional site by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The Department of Veterans Affairs’, Veterans Day National Committee has selected Travis County and the City of Austin as a National Regional Site for this 2017 Veterans’ Day celebration. This marks America’s 63nd Annual Veterans’ Day event. There will be a flyover and entertainment, as well as a ceremony at the steps of the Capitol. FREE!
  4. E.A.S.T. (East Austin Studio Tour)
    Sat. & Sun., November 11-12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. | Multiple east Austin locations
    This is a FREE, annual, self-guided art event. EAST provides opportunities for the public to meet the artists and artisans of Austin in their creative spaces.This year marks the 15th edition of the tour. Since East’s inception in 2003, participation has grown from 28 creatives to over 400 – attracting over 30,000 audience members, ranging from local neighbors to international visitors. With so much growth, they are working to bring you more personalized experiences – from themed tours to neighborhood hubs – to help you make the most of all there is to see and do. FREE!
  5. Second Saturdays are for Families: Action Painting!
    Saturday, November 11, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. | The Contemporary Austin at The Jones Center, 700 Congress Ave
    Make a painting using your whole body! Practice throwing paper pulp to create a work of art inspired by artist Wangechi Mutu’s exhibition. See Mutu’s work in the gallery, and be sure to stop by the first floor to take in the immersive film and sculptures by John Bock. Recommended for ages 2–11. Reservations are requested for family art-making workshops; please reserve your spot here beginning the 1st of each month. FREE!
  6. Barnes & Noble Mini Maker Faire
    Sat. & Sun., November 11-12, 2017 at Noon | Barnes & Noble Arboretum, 10000 Research Blvd
    Barnes & Noble, in partnership with Maker Media, presents the 3rd annual Mini Maker Faire for kids of all ages. Experience the latest in creative photography, virtual reality, DIY radio control, robotics, programming, and more. Hear from local Makers, thought leaders, and top brands about the latest trends in designing, building, creating and making. Immerse yourself in the process of ideating, creating, and constructing. FREE!
  7. 7th Annual Children and Family Nature’s Workshop
    Saturday, November 11 from noon to 4 p.m. | George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, 1165 Angelina St
    The purpose of this FREE event is to explore and appreciate nature with children of all ages. Bey Acupuncture seeks to share the sincerity of nature with the community at large, promote a healthy lifestyle and creative expression. Activities include Kid Yoga, Dance Therapy, Shirt Screening, and more! The event is FREE and open to children of all ages.
  8. Fall Harvest Family Day
    Saturday, November 11 from 1-4 p.m. | Elisabet Ney Museum, 304 E 44th St,
    Come to the Elisabet Ney Museum to celebrate fresh fall weather with fall treats, cider, fall nature art activities, and animal demonstrations. Learn about the surrounding nature and the fall landscape. FREE!
  9. Family Day at UMLAUF
    Sunday, Nov. 12 from noon to 4 p.m. |  UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum, 605 Robert E Lee Rd
    Monthly Family Days are designed for families and friends to explore and create. On the second Sunday of each month, we feature a line-up of activities including Sculpture Safaris, children’s art activities, family tours, yoga in the Garden, story time, music and dance performances. This event is FREE and open to the public.
  10. ATX Think Bilingual Fair
    Sunday, November 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. | Asian American Resource Center, 8401 Cameron Rd, Austin
    Bilingualism “expands horizons, opens gateways, and breaks down barriers.” Join Think Bilingual Austin to find bilingual and multicultural resources for the entire family. Engage your kids in fun, multicultural and language-based activities, programs, and performances, and get in the know with workshops and panel sessions for parents. FREE and open to the public.

  • Laura’s Library Artisan Market
    Saturday, November 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Laura Bush Community Library, 9411 FM-2244
    The Laura’s Library Artisans’ Market is a juried craft show hosting about 34 Austin area artists, a large silent auction and food trucks. All items are handmade! The show is a fundraiser for student scholarships, as well as various library programs offered free to the public. Admission and parking are FREE. Located at the Laura Bush Library, 9411 Bee Cave Rd, just 3 miles west of Highway 360. Indoor and outdoor booths.

  • Wurstfest (New Braunfels) ($10)
    November 10-12, hours vary | 120 Landa Street, New Braunfels
    Attend a unique and massively fun annual celebration rich in German culture and full of Texas fun – this festival is worth the drive! Located near the headwaters of the beautiful Comal River in New Braunfels,  you’ll enjoy good food, music, dancing, exciting carnival rides and games, German, Texan and domestic beer, special events and the finest in Alpine and Bavarian Style Entertainment. It all happens at Wurstfest! The best ten days in sausage history. No admission ticket is required if you enter the gates after 3 p.m. on Sunday. Kids 12 and under are always FREE!

    Come celebrate the release of Jon Dee Graham’s quintessential album Escape From Monster Island on LP from New West Records. An Austin-based musician, Graham was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame three times, and has also been named as a Musician of the Year by SXSW. Refreshments provided by Shiner Beer! FREE!
