SXSW is here but that’s not the only thing going on in Austin! From a new Mondo Gallery exhibit to the Rodeo Rumble to the SXSW Wellness Expo, these are the top 10 FREE events happening in and around town this week.

  1. 98.1 KVET Military Breakfast 
    Friday, March 9 | from 5 to 10 a.m. | Cowboy Harley-Davidson of Austin
    Head out to Cowboy Harley-Davidson of Austin on March 9 for the KVET Military Breakfast with Bama, Rob and Heather! Rudy’s “Country Store” and Bar-B-Q will be bringing out Bar-B-Q breakfast tacos, they’ll have a National Anthem, ROTC presenting of the colors, a pledge of allegiance, and KVET will be broadcasting LIVE from the showroom floor throughout the entire event.
  2. Mondo Gallery Presents – Batman The Animated Series
    Friday, March 9 | from 6 to 9 p.m. | Mondo Gallery, 4115 Guadalupe St.
    Mondo is thrilled to announce their next gallery show, “Batman: The Animated Series.” The show kicks off with an opening night reception that’s FREE and open to the public. Following the opening reception, the show will run during regular gallery hours (12 to 6 p.m.) through March 12.
  3. Hook Free Outdoor Screening
    Friday, March 9 | from 6:30 to 9 p.m. | The Community Cinema at Community First! Village, 9301 Hog Eye Rd.
    Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a FREE movie night at Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening of Coco. Get there as early as 6:30 to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks. Hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase (cash preferred). The event is free, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated.
  4. SXSW Wellness Expo 2018
    Saturday, March 10, and Sunday, March 11 | from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. | Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd.
    For the first time, SXSW is hosting the SXSW Wellness Expo dedicated to fueling your mind, body, and soul. Occurring over two days at the Palmer Events Center, this exhibition brings together thousands of SXSW attendees interested in healthy living and companies in the continually growing health and wellness industry. This event is all ages, FREE, and open to the public. Get your SXSW 2018 Guest Pass to attend here.
  5. Rodeo Rumble
    Saturday, March 10 | from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Luedecke Arena at Travis County Expo Center, 7311 Decker Ln.
    The Rodeo Austin Rodeo Rumble Kid’s 1K Fun Run is a FREE event for children ages 12 and under. Held in Luedecke Arena on Saturday, March 10, and beginning at 9:30 a.m., children get the chance to race on the dirt where the cowboys and cowgirls compete each night! Registration opens at 9 a.m.
  6. Family Programs: Art Free-for-All
    Saturday, March 10 | from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. | The Contemporary Austin at Laguna Gloria, 3809 W. 35th St.
    It’s time for the annual family-friendly open house! Enjoy hands-on Art School demonstrations, play in a cardboard maze, catch a special dance performance by Lacey Richter, and make key chain art inspired by Ryan Gander’s hanging sculptures. Bring the family and spend a spring day at Laguna Gloria!
  7. Third Annual Kite Fest (Dripping Springs)
    Saturday, March 10 | from 12 to 9 p.m. | Treaty Oak Brewing & Distillery, 16604 Fitzhugh Rd., Dripping Springs
    Treaty Oak Distilling Co. invites you to the 3rd Annual Kite Festival, a celebration of Spring, great food, rad jams and of course our hand crafted spirits. There will be an ALL DAY Distillery open house with a Q&A with  tour masters. Check-in at the front of the Distillery to find available times and sign up. Don’t have a kite? Don’t sweat it! World Wind Kites will here selling kites for you to fly. Live music too!
  8. Colors of the Wind Watercolor (Lockhart)
    Saturday, March 10 | from 2 to 3 p.m. | Lockhart State Park, 2012 State Park Rd., Lockhart
    Channel your inner artist in this outdoor painting program! Watercolor painting is a fun way to make keepsakes, especially when you travel. No experience required. The park will supply watercolor paper, paint, and brushes; however, you can bring your own supplies, if you prefer. There will also be a limited supply of art boards and easels to borrow on a first come, first served basis. All ages welcome. Regular park entrance fees apply ($3/adult, free for children 12 & under).
  9. Game On Board Games (Pflugerville)
    Sunday, March 11 | from 1 to 5:30 p.m. | Pflugerville Public Library, 1008 W. Pfluger St., Pflugerville
    Borrow board games to play at the library every Sunday afternoon. They have games for all ages, from Candy Land to Settlers of Catan.
  10. An Afternoon with Beekman 1802 & Lick Honest Ice Creams
    Sunday, March 11 | from 3 to 5 p.m. | Toms, 1401 S. Congress Ave.
    Lick Honest Ice Creams and Beekman 1802 Boys are joining forces for the first time at SXSW this year! The two brands are hosting a meet-and-greet event that will be open to the public at Toms flagship. Lick will be selling select merchandise and ice creams while Beekman sells and signs copies of their new cookbook. This event is FREE to the public and all of Lick’s ice cream proceeds from the day will go to Austin Food & Wine Alliance!
