March is here! This weekend you can watch an outdoor movie, show your favorite city park some love, listen to live music or make some of your own, catch a parade, fly a kite, and more.

Weekend Top 10 Free Events - Free Fun in Austin

A big thanks to our sponsor MossFest! The MossFest Children’s Concert honors the life of Moss Pieratt, who loved music and passed away suddenly at 15 months old. This year’s MossFest is happening Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. during the ABC Zilker Kite Festival. The line-up includes: Barton Hills Choir, Big Don, Hey Lolly! (with puppets) and Trout Fishing in America. There will be other kid friendly activities like kite building, cupcake decorating, balloon art, and face painting. Admission is FREE! Update: Due to inclement weather, MossFest and ABC Kite Fest have been rescheduled for next Sunday, March 12, 2017.

  1. Music Together® Family Class Demo (RSVP) − Friday at 9:45 a.m. and Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Children ages 0-5 and their caregivers are invited to experience a community of families sharing songs, instrument play, rhythm chants, and movement activities in a relaxed, playful setting. Sign up to attend a FREE demo class. Dance Discovery – Avery Ranch, 10526 W Parmer Ln, Austin.
  2. Community Cinema: The Incredibles  – Friday at 6:00 p.m. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy a special screening of The Incredibles. Arrive early to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy a family favorite on the big screen. Plus, stop by the Community Market to check out all the beautiful art and handcrafted products that Community First! residents make in the various micro-enterprise programs at the Village.   3. It’s My Park Day – All day Saturday; hours vary by park. It’s My Park Day is Austin Parks Foundation’s biggest city-wide volunteer event, when each year thousands of volunteers work to improve parks, trails, and greenbelts throughout the city.   4. Texas Independence Day ParadeSaturday at 9:30 a.m. Celebrate Texas Independence Day with a parade up Congress Avenue! This year marks the 181st birthday of Texas! Bring a lawnchair and a Texas flag to wave. Congress Avenue, Austin.
  5. Explore UT – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Explore UT aims to inform students, parents, teachers, and community members from across the state about the importance of the public research institution and higher education in Texas. The day-long event invites Texans of all ages to experience robust research experiences, hands-on demonstrations and experiments, and participate in the richness of the university’s scholarship and knowledge.   6. Spring Love Concert – Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Austin native Michael Gratovich, classical guitarist, will perform works by JS Bach, Leo Brouwer, and Isaac Albeniz in the first half of the concert, followed by performances by the CMFW Chamber Orchestra, CMFW Music Ambassadors and other Members & Friends of CMFW. All ages are welcome (including infants). Admission is FREE!   7. ABC Kite Festival – Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Kicking off Spring for the past 88 years, the ABC Kite Fest is one of Austin’s best-known and oldest annual events. This year’s schedule features a full day of family-friendly activities, including live music during the 2nd Annual MossFest, so pack a picnic and bring the kids (and dogs) to be a part of the spectacular sight of hundreds of kites amongst the Austin skyline.   8. H-E-B Free First Sunday: Texas Heritage – Sunday from Noon to 5:00 p.m. What do your Texas roots say about you? Share who you are and where you came from with hands-on activities and demonstrations that celebrate all who make Texas great. Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibitions that showcase artifacts from around the state. Special family programs from noon to 3:00 p.m. will combine art creation, exploration stations, and gallery activities. FREE! Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 N Congress Ave, Austin.
  9. Sunday Funday: The Lightbulb and the Electric Motor – Sunday from 1-4:00 p.m.  Sunday Fundays feature historically-inspired activities for children, scavenger hunts in the historic house, and informal tours of the museum. This month, roll up your sleeves and take a closer look at the well-known lightbulb and not-quite-as-well-known electric motor. Using nothing more than household batteries, History Lab experimenters can re-create some of Edison’s earliest attempts to find a filament that would give good light without burning too quickly and build a simple model electric motor.   10. Movie Music: In the Key of Giacchino – Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Cinematic Symphony celebrates multi-Grammy- and Academy Award-winning American composer Michael Giacchino. They will perform pieces from some of his best movie soundtracks and video game music, including Star Trek into Darkness, The Incredibles, Up, Ratatouille, and more.   • Sunshine Community Gardens’ Annual Spring Plant Sale – Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. This annual non-profit spring garden sale enables Sunshine Community Gardens to teach best organic practices to schools, clubs, and organizations and to donate some fresh vegetables for a local food pantry. Over 120 proven and tested Tomato varieties by local gardeners along with over 85 Wicked Hot and Sweet Bell Pepper varieties, 15 different types of Eggplants, and thousands of herbs ready for spring planting will be available for purchase.
