Keep the new year celebration going in the Austin area with these family friendly events! You and the fam can get Sleepless is Seattle, seek out things that “glow” in the dark at a night hike, hit up the When I Grow Up Festival and so much more. Here are the top 10 FREE events happening this week.

 

A big thanks to this week’s sponsor, the ZACH Theatre. As the premiere professional regional theatre serving thousands of students each year, ZACH’s Performing Arts School is committed to that same level of professionalism and excellence. Central Texans are invited to an Open House that showcases their upcoming winter classes at ZACH Theatre’s main campus this Saturday. There will be activities throughout the day, featuring demos and sample classes along with special guests and performances. Weekend Top 10 FREE Events: January 12-14, 2017

  1. Sleepless In Seattle – Community Cinema
    Friday, Jan. 12 | 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. | Community Cinema, 9301 Hogs Eye Rd.
    Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening of Sleepless in Seattle. The event is FREE, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated. Get there as early as 6:30 p.m. to explore and movie at 7:30 p.m.
  2. Night Hike (Wimberley)
    Friday, Jan. 12 | 6:30 to 8 p.m. | McKinney Falls State Park, 1101 FM 2325, Wimberley

    Discover the world that nocturnal animals experience each night – the park after dark! Find out what’s awake while you’re asleep! Seek out scorpions and other things that “glow” in the dark and experience the park at night. All programs are FREE with paid park admission, which is $6 per person ages 13 and over.
  3. Bethany Becker Trio
    Friday, Jan. 12 | 6 to 8 p.m. | Café Mueller by H-E-B
    Bethany Becker is a 19-year-old from Austin, who lives and breathes pop country music. Currently, she is touring around Texas and will perform a FREE family-friendly showcase at Café Mueller by H-E-B on Friday. Most recently, she finished a tour with High School Nation and “Drake and Josh” star Drake Bell.
  4. The Big Preschool Roundup (Cedar Park)
    Saturday, Jan. 13 | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | High Hopes Sports Center, 1800 Clover Ln., Cedar Park
    MOMS Club of Cedar Park presents its 2nd Annual Preschool Fair, The BIG Preschool Roundup, a one-stop shop for families to discover “All Things Preschool.” This event brings together a variety of educational institutions, as well as, extra-curricular activity groups and family-friendly businesses from Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, and the Northwest Austin Area
  5. Family Programs: Hit the Road

    Make your own cardboard art car inspired by the auto-themed work of art, then pull up to our drive-in movie theater to enjoy a special screening of the Kid Flix Mix from the New York International Children’s Film Festival. The Contemporary Austin offers free monthly hands-on art-making activities, brought to you by HomeAway. Recommended for ages 2–11.
  6. New Years Extravaganza Block Party
    Saturday, Jan. 13 | 3 to 7 p.m. | in.gredients, 2610 Manor Rd.
    Celebrate the New Year with a huge party at in.gredients!  They are featuring all of their favorite musicians, including Brand New Key, Much 2 Much, Neal Mehta, Dilly Billy, the Melissa Gail Klein Band, Staci Gray and more. They will be joined by the Tiny Tails mobile petting zoo and a ton of great local vendors offering sales and samples. Don’t miss this FREE event!
  7. ZACH Theater Campus Open House

    Central Texans are cordially invited to an Open House at ZACH Theatre’s main campus. There will be activities throughout the day, featuring onsite registration, demos and sample classes along with special guests and performances.   8. Second Sunday on the Farm (Buda)

    FREE family friendly event on the farm! The farm store will be open as well as the first Chicken CSA pick up of 2018! Farm tours at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with a short beeswax candle making class at 11 a.m., craft activities for the kids, chicken and pig selfies, and more.
  9. Family Day at UMLAUF
    Sunday, Jan. 14 | 12 to 4 p.m. | UMLAUF, 605 Robert E. Lee Rd.
    Bring your friends and family out for a FREE day of fun focused on health and wellness. This month they’ll be joined by the Japan-America Society of Greater Austin leading a New Year calligraphy activity. Yoga Meditation Group will be leading a family meditation session and ATX Yoga Girl will be leading a kid-friendly yoga session.   10. When I Grow Up Festival
    Sunday, Jan. 14 | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Asian American Resource Center, 8401 Cameron Rd.
    Does your kid ever wonder what it would be like to play music onstage, wear a police badge or go fishing with a park ranger? At the Partners in Parenting When I Grow Up Festival kids can do all of that and more. Tables will line the ballroom and professionals will interact with the children to share the tools of their trade. On the mainstage, kids can learn about artistic and entertainment fields through children’s musicians, story times, dance, yoga, and other exciting performances throughout the day. Popular children’s entertainer, Staci Gracy and the well known Much2Much will perform onstage from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Preschool Playtime ($5)
    Friday, Jan. 14 | 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Northwest Recreation Center, 14325 S. Turnersville Rd., Buda
    What better way to end the week (or start the weekend!) than to bring your children (ages 0-5)  to the fun and open play during Preschool Playtime? Whether they’re bouncing in the bouncy castle every other week, learning to pedal the tricycles, socializing with new friends, or bopping to age-appropriate tunes, there are plenty of things to keep children entertained and having fun in the full-size gymnasium. Moms, dads, grandparents, relatives and guardians are all welcome to attend. This program is offered every Friday, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM. The cost is $5 for a five visit pass card (card expires after six months). Parents/guardian supervision of children is required.
