It’s Labor Day weekend so we’re expanding our weekend top 10 list and including all the fun things happening in and around Austin on the holiday weekend. Best thing about it? They’re all FREE!


Weekend Top 10 FREE Events: August 31 – September 3, 2018

  1. RC Airshow – ARCA 2018
    Friday & Saturday, August 31 & September 1 | from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Austin Radio Control Association, 8705 Lindell Ln.
    This event is a heart-pounding, adrenaline pumping spectator event that is second to none in Texas! All the airplanes flying in this event have wingspans of 7 feet or more! Pilots from all over Texas, and beyond will be tearing up the sky with some of the most incredible realistic radio control airplanes that you will ever see! The Fall Big Bird event is an incredible experience for the family to come see on Friday, August 31, and, the BIG DAY, Saturday, September 1. The fun starts around 10 a.m. but get there earlier and talk to the pilots, see the planes and pick a spot to sit! FREE parking and FREE admission to the public. Concessions will be available for purchase onsite (11-3) with a shaded picnic area, and an air conditioned club house.
  2. Torchy’s Tacos Presents E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
    Friday, August 31 | at 6:30 p.m.| Mueller Lake Park, 4550 Mueller Blvd.
    Torchy’s Tacos will present a free screening of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial at Mueller Lake Park in celebration of their fifth annual Some Like It Hot August Taco of the Month campaign along with Alamo Drafthouse. Here’s what you need to know for this special one-night-only event: Torchy’s Tacos will have their Taco Truck onsite to serve up a selection of Torchy’s menu favorites. This event is free to the public, but it’s BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair). The screening will start at dark (around 8 p.m.) but there will be a pre-show and Torchy’s Tacos surprises starting at 6:30 p.m. This event is on a first come / first served in regards to seating. The park will fill up so get there early!
  3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off  Free Outdoor Screening
    Friday, August 31 | from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. | The Community Cinema at Community First! Village, 9301 Hog Eye Rd.
    Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a FREE movie night at Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screeningGet there early to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks. Hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase (cash preferred). The event is free, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated.
  4. Community Tie-Dye and Dance Party
    Saturday, September 1 | from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Austin City Hall, 301 w. 2nd St.
    Dance Another World is hosting a super fun, colorful event on Saturday, September 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is a Community Tie-Dye and Dance Party at City Hall. At the event, attendees will be able to buy and dye DAW shirts to take home. They will also have music and light entertainment for the morning.
  5. First Saturdays at George Washington Carver Museum
    Saturday, September 1 | from 12 to 4 p.m. | George Washington Carver Museum, 1165 Angelina St.
    The George Washington Carver Museum’s free, once-a-month event called First Saturday is created for people of color that should not be missed. This event will celebrates a range of themes each month. It’s family friendly, diverse, and the programming is intelligent. Activities, music, vendors, discussions, and more.
  6. Free Labor Day Weekend Community Event
    Saturday, September 1 | from 1 to 4 p.m. | Lenoir’s Wine Garden, 1807 S 1st St
    For the third year in a row, Lenoir, Lick Honest Ice Creams, and Revolution Spirits are celebrating community by turning the spotlight on Becker Elementary Schools’ organic and educational non-profit gardening program, The Becker Green Classroom. There will be ice cream to lick, wine, beer and Revolution Spirits to sip, and snacks to eat. ALL of the proceeds from Lick’s ice cream and a portion of other sales will also benefit Becker Elementary’s Green Classroom! If that’s not enough to entice you, then let the music perk your ears: The Lost Pines will be performing!
  7. Live Oak’s Labor Day Weekend Afternoon Concert Series!
    Saturday through Monday, September 1 through 3 | from 12 to 9 p.m. | Live Oak Brewing Company, 1615 Crozier Ln., Del Valle
    This Labor Day weekend, kick back and let local musicians and brewers labor for you. This is as live and local as it gets, y’all. They’ll have live local music every afternoon, cold beer, and fresh food from The Black Forest. Spend your holiday weekend here!   8. H-E-B Free First Sunday: Totally Texas
    Sunday, September 2 | from 12 to 5 p.m. | Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 Congress Ave.
    Enjoy FREE exhibition admission all day during Free First Sundays, held the first Sunday of every month. Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibitions that showcase artifacts from around the state. Special family programs from 12 to 3 p.m. combine art creation, exploration stations, and gallery activities.
  9. Bey-bor Day!
    Monday, September 3 | from 12 to 8 p.m. | St. Elmo Brewing Company, 440 E Saint Elmo Rd.
    Happy (almost) 37th anniversary of your labor Queen B!  In honor of Bey’s birthday St. Elmo’s will be RE-releasing our beer BEY: a Honey Ale brewed by the Beybs of St Elmo using locally sourced honey. What better way to spend your last day of a long holiday by drinking cold beer for a cause? 10% of sales that day will go to the Girls Empowerment Network, a local non-profit organization which promotes self- esteem and skills in young girls. There will be a representative from GEN on site from Noon to 2 p.m.
  10. Capitol Rotunda Community Sing
    Monday, September 3 | from 7 to 9 p.m. | Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Ave.
    The Texas Capitol is a glorious space for singing in community. The acoustics are unmatched and the symbolism of singing songs for connection and belonging in an historically divided political space is not insignificant. Song circles are lead by community song leader, Josh Blaine. Gifts/donations are graciously accepted to help support our mutual flourishing but are by no means required. Your presence is the greatest gift at all.
