Weekend Top 10 FREE Events (Aug 22-24, 2014)

  1. Alamo Kids Camp – Friday, August 22 – Sunday, August 24. See a FREE screening of An American Tail at Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline (14028 N US Hwy 183, Bldg F, Austin), Babe at Alamo Drafthouse Village (2700 West Anderson Ln, Austin), or Corpse Bride at Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin). Click on the links above for showtimes. All Alamo Kids Camp screenings are FREE! Tickets are available at the box office on the day of the show and seating is first come, first served. No children under the age of 3 will be admitted. Families with loud children will be asked to leave. 
  2. Back to School Bash at Dove Springs Recreation Center – Saturday, August 23, from 10 a.m. – noon. Dove Springs Rec Center will be giving away 400 backpacks filled with school supplies. Kids must be present to get a ticket for a FREE backpack. Vendors will also have some school supplies to give away. Come prepared for a line. TexARTS Free Day of Dance and Open House – Saturday, August 23, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. TexARTS Association for the Performing and Visual Arts welcomes community members of all ages to an Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Attendees can participate in free dance, drama and visual arts classes, meet the TexARTS instructors, watch selected performances from recent TexARTS productions, enjoy refreshments and win tickets to upcoming shows.   4. End of Summer Bash at La Patisserie – Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Enjoy free snow cones and a demonstration on how to make your own natural syrups at home. Austin Summer Musical for Children: The Wizard of Oz – Saturday, August 23 at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and Sunday, August 24 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Austin Summer Musical for Children presents the live musical theater version of the motion picture The Wizard of Oz. FREE tickets for the play are available at the door 45 minutes before showtime. Shows do fill up in a hurry, so plan to arrive at least an hour early (some people have been lining up 90 minutes early). Each adult in line can only get 4 free tickets. Appropriate for all ages. Horton Hears a Who – Saturday, August 23 at 8:15 p.m. Celebrate the end of summer with a movie in the park at Sammy’s House.  Play on the playground and enjoy the Dr. Seuss classic, Horton Hears a Who. Admission is FREE!   7. The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival – Sunday, August 24, from noon to 5 p.m. Bring family and friends (but no dogs, please) to partake in tastings, live music, and local vendors! Admission is FREE with a donation of three healthy, nonperishable food items or a suggested $5 cash donation to the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. Free parking will be available across from Plaza Saltillo, at the northwest corner of Fourth & Waller, for Hot Sauce Festival attendees.   8. Come Dance! with Ballet Austin – Sunday, August 24, from 1 – 5:40 p.m. Whether you love to dance or have never danced a step in your life, Come Dance is your day to get your groove on! Intergalactic Nemesis: Twin Infinity Sneak Peek – Sunday, August 24 at 3 p.m. The Austin Public Library will be hosting a sneak peek performance of Jason Neulander’s Intergalactic Nemesis: Twin Infinity, a live action graphic novel, at the Faulk Central Library. The Intergalactic Nemesis series is an Austin original which includes a radio play, comic book and the live-action graphic novel which is a mash-up of the play and books.   10. Austin Symphony Concerts in the Park – Sunday, August 24 at 7:30 p.m. This is the final week to catch a FREE Austin Symphony concert at the Hartman Park, located on the grounds of the Long Center. This week, you can enjoy Big Band music (click here for the program). Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and blanket and make it a group outing. FREE parking will be available at One Texas Center, located on Barton Springs Rd. at S. 1st Street. Paid parking will be available at the Palmer Garage for $7.   • Back to School Hair Cuts & Free BBQ (Round Rock) – Saturday, August 23, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Round Rock Police Department – with the help of local hair stylists – will help kids get a fresh start for the upcoming school year with its first “Kutz 4 Kids” event. Stylists from across the City will volunteer their time to give FREE haircuts during the event, which coincides with an Open House at the Police Department. Residents will be able to tour the police station and get a behind the scenes look at holding cells, Crime Scene Unit, K-9 Unit, fingerprinting, and more. FREE barbeque will be provided by the Round Rock Police Officers Association. FREE! Round Rock Police Department, 2701 N.
