Another fantastic weekend is here, and there are so many great things to do in and around Austin. Here are the top 10 FREE Austin events happening this weekend.

  1. Pioneer Painter and Heritage Exhibit Opening Reception
    Friday, April 12 | from 6 to 8 p.m. | Asian American Resource Center, 8401 Cameron Rd.
    Asian roots bloom locally in this dual exhibit opening showcasing the work of local artists R.C. Wong and Rakhee Jain Desai. Hear from the Wong Family about the prolific work of R.C. Wong. Enjoy a meet a greet with Rakhee Jain Desai and her approach to Batik in her work. Light refreshments provided. Free and open to the public.
  2. Concert in the Park
    Friday, April 12 | from 7 to 9:30 p.m. | Milburn Park, 1901 Sun Chase Blvd.
    Bring your lawn chairs/blankets as there is plenty of space. Food concessions will be available; you are welcome to bring a picnic and your own ice chest. Glass containers are prohibited. Band: Suede (cover band).
  3. Movies in the Park: Zoolander 
    Friday, April 12 | from 8:15 to 10:15 p.m. | Zilker Park (Monkey Tree), 898 Azie Morton Rd.
    Movies in the Park is a series of free films brought to you by Austin Parks Foundation. We’ll be visiting nine different parks this year, so head out to grab some food from our food trucks and enjoy a night under the stars and in front of the screen. If there’s inclement weather, the event will be moved to Friday, April 19th at 8:15 p.m.
  4. Keep Austin Beautiful
    Saturday, April 13 | from 9 to 11 a.m. | 100+ Sites in 31 Zip Codes in the Greater Austin Area
    Join Keep Austin Beautiful and 3,000 Austinites for the biggest annual city-wide day of service, Keep Austin Beautiful Day. Together you’ll remove 30,000 pounds of litter, plant trees and gardens, restore native habitats, and beautify neighborhoods. A volunteer appreciation party will follow at Givens Park from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  5. Austin Parks and Rec Presents Spring Fling
    Saturday, April 13 | from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Various Park Locations
    Join the City of Austin for our annual Spring Event. Saturday April 13 they will host our Egg Hunt followed by Carnival games for all youth at Gus Garcia Recreation Center, Turner Roberts Recreation Center, Givens Recreation Center & Dittmar Recreation Center. Each attendee will receive 10 free tickets for carnival games, or pay $3 for unlimited fun.
  6. Family Saturday – Food Art
    Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. | The Contemporary Austin Jones Center, 700 Congress Ave.
    Join in the galleries at the Jones Center to create edible art with a local expert, inspired by the newest exhibition by Abraham Cruzvillegas. Workshop free with reservation. Reserve your spot on-line beginning April 1. Thank you to H-E-B for supporting our free family programs.
  7. Ney Day
    Saturday, April 13 | from 12 to 5 p.m. | Elisabet Ney Museum, 304 E. 44th St.
    Join for the seventh annual Ney Day “Celebrating Women in the Arts, Sciences, and Civic Culture!” We will celebrate Elisabet Ney and her inspirational legacy with live music and booths from a wide variety of arts and social groups! This event is co-sponsored by The Friends of the Elisabet Ney Museum, and KUTX 98.9!
  8. Hope Day
    Sunday, April 14 | from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. | Hope Farmers Market, 412 E. Comal. St.
    Pillow fight day is an international phenomenon held in many major cities. This is a free event and families are welcomed. All pillows and proceeds will go towards the homeless. Step 1: Bring a pillow or camera. Step 2: Drop off extra unused pillow at drop off zone. Step 3: Pillow fight or spectate from the sidelines. Step 4: When finished leave pillow in a drop off zone for donation.
  9. UMLAUF Family Day
    Sunday, April 14 | from 12 to 4 p.m. | UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum, 605 Azie Morton Rd.
    Our monthly Family Days are designed for families and friends to explore and create. On the second Sunday of each month we feature a line-up of activities for families to enjoy. Join us for Family Day at the UMLAUF on Sunday, April 14 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Get the whole family together and enjoy a full day of fun activities including crafting, yoga, sing-alongs and more. This event is free and open to the public!
  10. 4th Annual Picnic: Ritmo Y Baile
    Sunday, April 14 | from 2 to 5 p.m. | Puerto Rican Cultural Center, 701 Tillery St.
    The 4th annual community picnic will kick off a Celebrando 2019 heritage project that will culminate in a Salsa & Heritage Festival. Bring your beach chairs and maraca! Dance Bomba, Plena, Taino dances and more under the Pecan Trees with special guests — Joaquin Nieves, Director of Guateque Ballet Folklorico & Irvin Santiago, Cuatrista and Trovador from Morovis — and performances by Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance.
