Watch Out: Tax Sammers Are Targeting UT Students

KVUE — Police at the University of Texas have reported two different cases of scammers calling students claiming they owe thousands in taxes and attempting to force them to pay over the phone.

On Tuesday, a UT student received a phone call from a person claiming to be a federal agent and told her she would be arrested if she did not pay $3,000 in “student taxes.” The caller told her to remain on the phone until she transferred funds to an account. The student texted her friend while on the phone, telling her she was being arrested. She told her friend to call her mother and have the funds wired to her account.
