Top 5 Free Things to do in Austin

Mueller Control Tower Lighting – Tuesday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m. The Reagan High School Drumline and the Nash Hernandez Orchestra will move the crowd into the holiday spirit and provide entertainment for the entire family. FREE hot chocolate, hot cider and cookies will be served while supplies last. Food trucks will be on-site with food available for purchase. Texas State Representative Celia Israel will be counting down the moments until the “Noel” sign is lit across the Control Tower, honoring a tradition that dates back to the 1960s. Christmas in the Community: Woodwinds – Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. The Austin Symphony is once again bringing free music to all Austinites this holiday season. “Christmas in the Community” is a series of ten concerts held throughout the city of Austin featuring different ensembles of the orchestra playing familiar holiday music. A Ringing Christmas Concert – Thursday, December 8 at Noon. Take a 30-minute lunchtime break to hear a festive holiday concert by the Austin Handbell Ensemble. FREE! Central Presbyterian Church, 200 E 8th St, Austin.

Science Under the Stars: Zombie Parasites – Thursday, December 8 at 6:00 p.m. What if you learned that real zombies do exist? Maybe not the flesh-eating ones depicted in Hollywood, but even stranger ones in nature? You might be surrounded by zombies and not even know it! Hear unbelievable tales about the mind-bending powers of parasites in their hosts. Arrive early for refreshments and fun activities for kids of all ages, followed by the talk at 7:00 p.m. Event is held outdoors. Explore Asia: Holiday Storytime and Crafts – Friday, December 9 from 1-3:00 p.m. Enter a winter wonderland of tales with this holiday-themed storytime, then make your own crafts based on the books.
