Celebrate ‘Movember’ With 7 Great Austin Events!

For better or worse, it looks like the man bun is finally making its way out of fashion, but as the quintessential month dedicated to facial hair reminds us, man whiskers are forever. Of course, Austin just wouldn’t be the same without a full month of celebrations of face fuzz and partying for good causes.

For those who are not familiar with Movember, it’s a month-long challenge wherein participants’ mustaches turn them into “a walking, talking billboard for men’s health,” according to the Movember Foundation site. Activities include fundraising for research for men’s health initiatives including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical inactivity, a move challenge, and more.

Join the gathering of the bearded ones (not related to the Gathering of the Juggalos, no need to be scared) at Craftsman this Thursday from 7-10pm as furry-faced friends come together to drink all of the whiskey, with a portion of sales benefiting Movember Foundation USA. Those sales will include drink specials featuring $4 Jameson, $5 Jameson Black Barrel, and $6 Jameson Caskmates. Local artisans Bossman Brands will also be around to give away some of their beard oil and other goodies.

Corner Bar is getting in on the fight against prostate cancer this Friday, as a percentage of bar sales from 7pm-12am will go toward the Movember Foundation. Need even more reason to drink for a cause? Jameson will match the amount that the bar raises, so you can start your night off with at least one good decision-as for the rest of your night? Well, we don’t judge. Jameson will also be raffling off some swag, with ticket sales going to the charity.

Likely the most fascinating concept in mustache celebrations comes this Saturday morning at HandleBar as Pure Barre Austin and E and J Barre Boutique host a Pure Barre Class at 11am, right next to the liquor bottles and bar stools. Following the class is a mustache party featuring cocktails, a DJ, a “largest package contest” <insert shocked emoji face here>, and mustache trims. And of course, ladies are welcome to join in. Be sure to sign up online to reserve your spot in the class.

If your idea of Movember is a little fancier, a little dandier than hanging out at a bar, chugging whiskey, The League restaurant in Lakeway is hosting a special Staches & Stashes five-course dinner with cocktail pairing and a DJ playing big band music. It’s a ‘20s party theme, so flappers and fedoras are encouraged for the evening. Tickets for dinner cost $65 and are available on their website.

The Team Austin Networkers are using their monthly event-a happy hour that helps other grow personally and professionally-to benefit the Movember Foundation (Team Austin MoBros) and get in on the hairy fun. From 5:30-8:30pm guests will drink, network, and listen to Daniel Eyes & the Vibes on the roof of Handlebar. They’ll also have mustache shavings and The Den on 5th will be giving away two free months of coworking.

The Movember parties just can’t be contained to Austin proper, so if you like hanging out in Kyle, you’ll want to check out the Concerts for a Cause Movember party from 5-8pm at the Down South Railhouse. The party is to help The Simply Charming Mo’s of Kyle in their endeavor to raise money for Movember Foundation, featuring music by Trashy Kid (6-8pm) and The Easy Out (5-6pm), a silent auction, and a raffle.

Rounding out the saddest month of the year for razor salesmen is Handlebar’s 4th Annual Mustache Competition, featuring thousands of dollars in prize money. DJ Protégé will be getting the crowd excited while they judge the competitors for best mustache, best beard, and best fake stache. The party starts at 8pm and features specials from sponsors Jack Daniel’s and PBR, helping to lube up competitors to strut their stuff on the runway. Competitors-be ready to put on a show!
