Six Austin Coffee Shops Participate In Nationwide Fundraiser Benefiting The ACLU

Grab your mug and prepare to be over-caffeinated (if there is such a thing), because six local coffee shops are participating in the Nationwide Coffee Fundraiser for the ACLU Nationwide. Sprudge, an online publication that features coffee culture, news, and events, organized the weekend-long event earlier this week.

In just days, the total number of participants has grown to include 195 brands and 401 cafes, including Café Medici, Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors, Fleet Coffee, Houndstooth Coffee, Once Over Coffee Bar, and Wright Bro’s Brew & Brew here in Austin.

Starting today, February 3, coffee shops around the country are joining together and donating a percentage of their profits to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)  a trend that’s been gaining momentum since President Trump’s Inauguration; even more so after he signed an executive order banning citizens from seven predominately Muslim countries from entering the U.S.

Before heading out, though, take a minute to check each café’s social pages to learn what items to order and how much of your purchase will be donated. Brew & Brew, for example, is donating $1 from every filter or iced coffee, while Houndstooth plans to match guests’ donations up to $1,000 over the weekend at each of the four cafes.

If posting to your own personal social channels, be sure to include the hashtags dubbed by Sprudge for the event: #RefugeesWelcome and #YesEqual. For those who can’t visit these cafes, the fundraiser still encourages direct donations to the ACLU.
