Pool Feature: Dick Nichols Pool

Dick Nichols pool located in South Austin is a great place for spending time on a hot summer day. Located in a park that offers many nice bike and walking trails and a pretty large playground, the pool is free and offers many options for all kinds of swimmers. I found my way there many times this summer with my son for his swimming lessons. While he refused to participate, I checked out all the pool had to offer.

Dick Nichols PoolThe facility has a small pool for toddlers that is only just over 1 foot deep throughout. The pool is separated by a fence from the other pools and is a nice place for the littlest swimmers to splash around and play.

Dick Nichols PoolThe bigger pool is divided into two sections. There is a big area of the pool that starts at 3 feet and goes a bit deeper than 4 feet. This section is perfect for the younger crowd just learning to swim and the adults just wanting to hang out in the water. The steps go the length of one side of the pool and make it feel even shallower for part of it.

Dick Nichols PoolThere is also a second, separate, section of the pool that is set aside for those wishing to swim laps and those wanting to swim in a deeper pool. This part of the pool goes up to 8 feet. There is no diving board at the pool, but plenty of space to cannonball in from the side.

Dick Nichols PoolInside the pool area there are a few tables and benches with shade cover. Most of the pool is not shaded. Right next to the pool is a large playground, plenty of shaded picnic tables and even a really small area with one water feature for splashing. I wouldn’t call it a splash pad, but if you don’t want to swim after getting too hot on the playground, it is another option for cooling off.
