Photo Tour: Rad New Playground in San Antonio’s Hemisfair Park

Hemisfair Park–site of the 1968 World’s Fair–has always been an enjoyable little jaunt off the San Antonio River Walk for my family. But now that the park has opened the awe-inspiring Yanaguana Garden, it will be our must-go destination every time we visit Alamo City!

As Phase One of the redevelopment of Hemisfair Park, Yanaguana Garden opened last fall.  The Garden can be tricky to locate when coming from the River Walk, with so much construction in the park ongoing (Civic Park–Phase Two–is slated to open in 2018 and Tower Park–Phase Three–will open in 2020). But the hunt is well worth the reward.  Just follow the sounds of happy children and you’re sure to find the playground tucked away in the southwest corner of the park.

Yanaguana Garden has it all: a splash pad, a giant sand pit, innovative structures for climbing, swinging, leaping, and sliding, an outdoor piano, and games for all ages!

Visitors will love the outdoor Ping Pong Tables, Foosball, Chess Tables, Bocce Ball Court, and Giant Chess and Checkers Boards. You really can while hours away in this park, especially on a lovely day.

Historic homes, mosaics and artwork throughout all add to the character of the Garden.

And, the best part of visiting from out of town, the Garden offers toys to borrow. There are buckets and shovels in the sand box, hula hoops on the lawn, and we even saw a stray ball or two. Hemisfair Park San Antonio
