The Mermaids of San Marcos are ready to make their first splash this weekend at the Mermaid Parade and SPLASH Festival on Saturday, September 17, 2016. The fun starts in downtown San Marcos at 10:00 a.m. with the Mermaid Parade. The parade will feature floats, marchers, music and all things San Marcos.

Leading the parade is Austin Samba and Las Monas de San Antonio bringing their brand of “radical creativity, fantasy and imagination” to the parade with a sizzling combination of rhythm, dance, movement, color, joy and of course, giant mermaid puppets!

The SMTX Mermaid Parade was created to strengthen community engagement and celebrate San Marcos’ unique river and art culture. Shirley Rogers, and her Mermaid Court–all former Aquamaids from Aquarena Springs–will be among some of the inaugural highlights of this all-inclusive parade.

Additionally, the Mermaid Parade will serve as a creative centerpiece to publicly highlight selected honorees representing the arts, conservation stewardship, local business, and heritage of San Marcos. The mission of SPLASH is Stewardship, Preservation, Local, Art, Sustainability and Heritage for all things San Marcos.

As the parade winds down, the party is just getting started over at the SPLASH Festival! Starting at 1:00 p.m., San Marcos Plaza Park will transform into a sea of magical mermaids. The San Marcos River serves as the beautiful backdrop to this fun filled FREE festival that has something for merfolk of all ages.

The significance of The Mermaid SPLASH is to serve as an innovative platform to bridge the arts with river stewardship for the future of San Marcos. To honor that creative spirit, there will be a artisan alley, mermaid marketplace, and live music by local musicians Fire in the Pines, The Railhouse Band, and The Revs.

To help preserve the beauty of San Marcos, there will also be an Eco Village to support local conservation efforts. Festival goers will learn about conservation stewardship and take part in the variety of interactive activities planned for the whole family, to include hands-on workshops, scheduled presentations by environmental experts, and art inspired learning projects for everyone.
