Now that bluebonnets line the highways and backroads, Austin is primed for the outdoor concert season. Stock up on sunscreen and allergy medicine, because you’re going to be outside a lot over the coming months. Warm days fade into cool nights, and gentle breezes carry songs all over the Austin area.

The Free Texas Music Series, put on by local radio station KOKE FM, has become a spring and summer staple for country music fans. You can see and hear the same artists you hear over KOKE FM’s airwaves on 98.5 and 99.3, but seeing them in person is a totally different experience. The series has hopped around several venues over the past few years, but this year it is back home at Hill’s Cafe, underneath the old oak trees at 4700 South Congress Avenue.

If this year’s shows are anything like years past, you will be able to see some of Texas country’s rising stars and veteran stalwarts without paying their normally high ticket prices. Just make your way to Hill’s Cafe on Wednesday nights to take in concerts. They plan to put one on every Wednesday night for the next 20 weeks.

The festivities kick off April 8 with headliner Roger Creager followed by Dale Watson on April 15, Uncle Lucius on April 22, and Hayes Carll on April 29. More artists will be announced as their show dates draw closer.

The concerts are free for those 21 and up. Younger folks can get in for a small cover charge.

Bring some friends to split the parking fee, or take a CapMetro bus to the South Congress Transit Station half a mile north of Hill’s. No matter how you get there, just get there. You have no excuses for missing out on top quality Texas country music.
