It’s Official! California Really Is Taking Over Austin

Despite the warnings Austinites have given to California, Californians just won’t stop moving here! Even the pandemic wasn’t enough to stop them. Now there’s this.

Here is another example of how California is taking over Austin.

Austin Business Journal recently reported that a California company is getting the approval to bring a large film studio to Bastrop. They also have possible plans to develop the area around the studio with stores, restaurants, hotels, and more. Bastrop is no stranger to film though, you can find all the movies filmed there here.

The new film studio would create jobs and generate a big economic impact but there are just as many cons that affect the existing Bastrop community. Neighbors in the neighborhood where the studio would reside have brought up concerns of noise, artificial lights, and traffic at all hours of the day and night. According to KVUE, another neighbor even created a Change.org petition calling on the entire development to stop.

You know what’s not a con? The fact that Bastrop has a Buc-ee’s. Check out our post about the best snacks to grab while you’re there.

If approved by city council, construction on the studio, called Bastrop 552, would start later this year.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Even without the studio, Austin and Central Texas in general is definitely growing at a rapid pace.

It is what it is, but here’s a tip sent with love to all the newcomers: please keep Austin “weird.”
