2016 was a fantastic year for local bands in Austin. As always, we try to bring our readers a variety of different artists from nearly every genre out there. From artists such as Basketball Shorts, The Wind and The Wave, The Deer, and River Jones, we hope that we have satisfied your local music cravings for this year and that 2017 will get even more exciting bands on your radar. Take a listen to the playlist we’ve created below to get a taste of our favorite artists from the past year.

Is there a song that we missed? Let us know in the comments! Happy New Year!

Basketball Shorts – Romo To Dez

“The record’s bouncy personality will be a hit with locals who want to see a fun group that doesn’t take things too seriously.”

Jonathan Fox Band – Play It Cool

“The Jonathan Fox Band brings a relaxing, indie style that we’re happy to get lost in.”

Otis The Destroyer – Cheetah

“The band’s latest single, “Cheetah,” is a fun and rambunctious track that cuts through the snotty attitude of hardcore punk.”

The Wind and The Wave – Grand Canyon

“The song has a rock edge with hard-hitting drums, making “Grand Canyon” a sure success for the group, as they release consistently good country tunes that stand out from the saturated local scene.”

Caitlin Krauss-Torres – Waiting On The World

“Caitlin Kraus-Torres is an acoustic singer-songwriter in Austin who you need to know!”

The Deer – Do Return

Do Return” showcases the band’s experimental and drowsy sound. It’s a perfect track for music fans looking to indulge themselves in dream-pop music.”

Jess Williamson – Say It

“Stripping the song down to a few select instruments allows Williamson’s audience the chance to really get to hear her sing, while getting us excited about what’s to come on Heart Song.”

Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes – Sundance Kid

“Tying it all together are the impassioned, strained vocals from front man and guitarist Jacob Cruz, making “Sundance Kid” a perfect indie anthem for the summer.”

River Jones – Pure

“While “Pure” never boasts its greatness, its sound expresses very subtly that it is truly extraordinary — so much that you may find yourself humming the tune for hours or days to come.”

Midnight Stroll – Just Hang On

“Teaming up with local guitarist Jonas Wilson, both musicians do an excellent job at giving the song a heart and soul which resonates with their audience, in addition to a guitar part that adds a layer of eeriness, giving the track a creepy vibe.”
