For better or for worse, technology is a permanent part of children’s lives these days. As kids and adults alike spend their days surrounded by phones, TVs, computers and more, many parents are concerned about the isolating effects of life spent in front of screens.
Friends Gauri Nanda and Audry Hill dreamed of making technology more social, and the Toymail Mailman was born — a cool little toy that can relay voice messages recorded and sent via the free Toymail app. Once they receive a message, kids can then use the toy itself to record and send replies. Whether you’re at the grocery store, out for the evening or halfway around the world, the Toymail Mailman helps you stay connected in a playful way to the kids you love.
Interesting fact: Toymail came about thanks to a successful Kickstarter funding campaign last year. (If you click the link, you can read all about the product and its creators, and watch some cute videos of kids using their Mailmen.)
- First you download the FREE Toymail app to your Smartphone and use it to connect your Mailman to your home Wifi network. (NOTE: Currently, the Toymail app is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch only.)
- Then you use the app to record a message and send it to your child’s Mailman.
- The Mailman makes a snorting, wheezing or whinnying sound to let your child know they have a new message. Your child can listen to the message — played either in your voice or in the Mailman’s own funny one — and can then send you a reply right from the toy.
- The first 100 “stamps” are FREE (one stamp = one voice message of up to 50MB). Once those have been used, you can purchase more via the app (50 stamps for $0.99, or unlimited stamps for $2.99 a month).
From the app description: “Most apps isolate kids in play. The Toymail app does the opposite. Toymail helps you stay connected to the kids you love.”

|Zeph likes the Mailman|
One last word about the Mailman — it is made of a firm plastic that’s pleasantly soft to the touch, yet it’s hardy enough to withstand rough treatment from a 10-month-old. In my house, that’s important!
|I mean, he REALLY likes it!|
Catherine A. Morris is a writer as well as a once-and-future teacher, musician, jogger and triathlete living in southwest Austin, Texas. Yes, most of her former passions and pastimes have given way, at least for now, to her current, main passion and pastime: caring for her two kids, toddler Pearl and baby Zephyr. Pearl and Zeph make Catherine and her husband laugh (and cry) on a daily basis, and give Catherine plenty of good reasons to seek out free, fun activities to keep everyone alive, engaged and happy from one moment to the next.
Disclosure: We received a free Mailman, to give the toy a try. All opinions are the author’s.
