Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ MAMMA MIA! returns to Bass Concert Hall January 27-28, 2017. In anticipation of the farewell tour’s stop in Austin, we asked Sarah Smith, who plays Rosie in the show, a few questions.

smith-headshotWhat were you doing before joining the cast of MAMMA MIA?

I joined the cast of MAMMA MIA in its second year, which was September of 2014. Before coming back to New York City to begin rehearsals, I was in Illinois finishing a summer contract where I was played Rona Lisa Peretti in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Bertha the French housekeeper in the farce Boeing Boeing, Audrey in Shakespeare’s As You Like It and The Witch in Into the Woods.

Were you an ABBA fan before auditioning?

Yes! A resounding YES!! ABBA Gold was a permanent fixture in my car in high school! If you were riding in my car, chances are you were gonna hear some of those great ABBA harmonies!

How did you prepare for your role as Rosie?

The way I prepare for a role varies with every show. In this case, I had never seen the show and I also had only four days of rehearsal before going into tech. So I made sure to read through the script several times and write down any context clues given about the character. I then filled in the “history” of my character for myself so that I knew her story. From there I memorized my lines, but with little inflection. This way I would be prepared with words and context but allow myself the freedom to play off of what the other characters/actors were giving me in each scene. This allows me to live in the moment and organically respond within the given circumstances – to try different things and find what works best from moment to moment. During the rehearsal period is usually when I discover how she moves, talks and responds physically to the world around her. The finishing touches happen over time as you find nuances and details to flush out a living breathing performance.

What is your favorite number to perform in the show and why?

I have a lot of favorite moments in the show, but the finale is definitely the one that sparkles for me because that is the moment when the fourth wall comes down and we get to truly invite the audience in to celebrate and party with us! If you come for the show, make sure you stay for the party.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Having been with the show for so long I have now met audience members after the show who have and will see the show multiple times. What I look forward to is getting to see those people again. It is such a rare opportunity to meet our patrons and connect with them and then get to see them again when you come through that town or city a second or third time – or when they drive to other cities to see the show again. To reconnect with them and let them know how much we appreciate them coming out and supporting us over and over again is a great thing. And sometimes, we get to do special things for them as well.  I also look forward to revisiting some cities that I have fallen in love with and seeing friends along the way!!
