Free Skate and BMX Parks in Austin

Northeast Metro Park Skate/BMX Park

I have featured local skate parks on Free Fun in Austin before, but always with teenagers in mind.  It never occurred to me to take my own sons, ages five to 11, who have not yet mastered the art of staying upright on a skateboard. This winter break, however, I loaded the car with boys, bikes, scooters, and helmets to give the skate/BMX park at Northeast Metropolitan Park a try. From my kids’ excitement level, you would have thought I was taking them to Disney World.  They had a blast navigating the hilly concrete terrain, made some new friends, and came home with all limbs (and heads) intact.

If you have kids with energy to burn, they may enjoy one of the many free skate and BMX parks in Austin and beyond.  I would like to note, however, that if you have younger kids, a morning visit might work best.  We returned to the Northeast Metro Park early one evening this week and didn’t have as much fun as our initial visit.  At 5 p.m., the park was crowded with older, more seasoned (and salty mouthed) skaters and I worried that my kids were in their way. We did witness some amazing stunts, but we didn’t stay long that second visit.

Have you been to any of the skate parks listed below? Please feel free to share feedback in the comments!
