Free Date Nights in Austin (February 5-9)


Thursday, February 5

First Thursday happens this week and takes place along South Congress Avenue, generally from Barton Springs Road to Elizabeth Street. The SoCo block party starts at 6pm and the stores along South Congress that normally close early stay open late until about 10pm. They will be joined by craft vendors, live music, and special guests. One of Austin’s best block parties! (South Congress Avenue, Austin)

Soul Thursdays at the Blackheart

Soul Thursdays at The Blackheart with ROXY ROCA and Mrs. Glass. This dynamite duo of bands is reuniting at the Blackheart this Thursday and serving up lots of booty-shaking and feel good soul starting at 9pm. (The Blackheart, 86 Rainey Street, Austin)

Friday, February 6

Austin-based acoustic band Wood and Wire released their album, The Coast, this week and is celebrating with a special show at Waterloo Records this Friday. The event is FREE with refreshments provided by Shiner. (Waterloo Records, 600A North Lamar, Austin)

Valley Mountain headline Hill’s Cafe this Friday. This Folk and Americana band is from Waco, TX and their sound is reminiscent of early Fleet Foxes and the Avett Brothers. FREE music from 7-9pm. (Hill’s Cafe, 4700 South Congress Ave, Austin)

Official Carnaval Kick-Off Party

101X, Menage a Trois vodka, and Speakeasy are sponsoring the offical kick-off of Carnaval this Friday. There will be a special cocktail hour from 7-8pm, LIVE body painting at 7pm by Donald McCaskill and Paul Malachi, and performance by Austin’s very own Samba School, Acadêmicos da Ópera, equipped with Brazilian-style samba drummers and dancers to give you a taste of their upcoming performance at Carnaval on February 28, 2015. Open Canopy: Print Austin

Open Canopy is a FREE monthly Open House at the Canopy creative arts complex, held on the first Saturday of each month 12-6pm. Studios and galleries welcome the public to view current exhibitions and studio work. Each month will feature special events, workshops, and demonstrations throughout the complex. This event showcases the diverse talent of local artists in East Austin. (916 Springdale Road, Austin)

SURE THING Comedy Show

SURE THING comedy show at the original Austin Java starts at 8pm. Various comedians are performing and the show is hosted by Duncan Carson and Brendan K. O’Grady. Hooked on Mueller: Mueller Lake Park

Enjoy FREE urban fishing at Mueller Lake Park this Sunday from 10am-noon. Texas Parks & Wildlife will stock the lake with 2,000 rainbow trout for catching and eating. Fish enthusiasts can also learn how to cook tasty trout dishes by visiting the Mueller Farmers’ Market, where vendors will be demonstrating how to prepare the trout and selling sides to complement the fish. (Mueller Lake Park, 4450 Mueller Blvd, Austin)

E4 Gallery will be holding FREE demonstrations in unique printmaking techniques every Sunday this month. This Sunday’s demonstration will feature pottery and printmaking with Melissa Mencini from noon-2pm. The event will be held on the left side of Armadillo Clay and Supplies.
