Free Bereavement Camp for Kids

For those children who have had the unfortunate experience of losing a significant person in their life due to death, Hospice Austin offers a free therapeutic camp to help them work through their grief. Camp Brave Heart is a 3-day overnight camp held at John Knox Ranch, near Wimberley, in the heart of the Hill Country, that mixes fun and feelings.

Camp Brave Heart brings together the fun of a recreational camp with bereavement support for kids ages 6 through 17 who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to death and are dealing with the complicated emotions that result from that loss. The campers explore their feelings and the emotional, behavioral and physical adjustments to the loss through creative activities. Counselors experienced in child and adolescent grief support lead discussions and exercises.

Parents or guardians are asked to complete and return an application form. Upon acceptance, parents or guardiarns are asked to provide additional information. Campers are accepted on a first come, first served basis after a determination that the child is emotionally ready and able to participate and benefit from the camp.

Camp Brave Heart is offered free to those children who need it thanks to generous donations from members of the community. For more information about Camp Brave Heart, go here.
