Visit the South Austin Volcano: easy, short hike with optional beverages after

July 11 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Ground rules: As this is a preserve, no dogs are allowed, even if leashed. (Cosmic is dog-friendly, for the record.) No-shows and last-minute cancellations won’t hike with me again.

Trail: this is a short (easy) but up-and-down (moderate) dirt trail, half shaded. The trail overlooks Blunn Creek, and leads to a volcano with informational signage. Yes, South Austin has an old volcano!

How far, how long: Two miles max, no more than an hour. Then we’ll optionally refresh at Cosmic Coffee, which has food trailers, adult beverages, and a pretty koi pond.

Meeting point: Park on St. Edward’s Drive, but please don’t park directly in front of the trailhead. Our trailhead is across the street from the Brothers of the Holy Cross facility, .4 mile from I-35. It’s the second entrance to the park from I-35, so if you’re not directly across from the Brothers building, you’re in the wrong place. Look for a silver Kia and a probably-masked guy who looks just like me. (I’m taking social distancing seriously until we learn much more.)

Personal prep: I recommend coming well hydrated. Walking shoes will be fine.
